Why vegetarian diet is important for spirituality and meditation

if you want to live a spiritual life or go deep in meditation or want to excel in any spiritual sadhana then vegetarianism is surely going to help you tremendously.

vegetarian diet is very conducive for spiritual growth. almost all religions and spiritual teachers have given emphasis on vegetarianism.

why vegetarian diet is important for spirituality and meditation:

1. when we kill any animal for our food then we not only eat the animal flesh but also its emotions and energy. when an animal is dying then it is in extreme panic and fearful state. all this emotions of fear, panic and anger are released in the animal body. which in turn are absorbed by our energy bodies and will affect our mental state negatively. our energy bodies determines the well being of our emotional and psychic state. the non-vegetarian diet is also reflected in our aura.

2. in meditation, we try to raise our consciousness. men is more conscious than animals. but if we eat non-vegetarian food then it lowers our consciousness and makes us more unconsciousness. meditation is the path from unconscious state to super conscious state.

3. when an animal is being killed then it is giving curse. this curse will be shared by everybody who will be involved in killing the animal, cooking its flesh, serving it and then the eater. in tantra, they knew about this. so advance tantrics always try to balance the karma with the animal, whose flesh they are eating/using during tantric rituals. i came to know this fact while reading aghori vimalnanda books on tantra written by robert svobodha. excellent books for someone who is interested in tantra and aghora.

4. non-vegetarian food makes our energy body very heavy. to go higher in an spiritual practice, our energy bodies or aura should be very clean and lighter. it should not be burdened with emotions or desires. thats why even in vegetarian food, the satvic food is given more emphasis. non-vegetarian food makes us more rooted to earth and earthy emotions and thus our soul cannot fly high in spiritual practices or meditation.

5. non-vegetarian food increases the tendencies of sexuality, violence, anger, jealousy in the person. whereas vegetarian food makes the person more calm and peaceful. here, i don’t mean that all vegetarian people are peaceful. i am just indicating the qualities which vegetarian and non-vegetarian food has.

6. by killing any animal directly on indirectly, the person generates karmic ties with the animal. as per law of karma everything gets balanced and come back to us. so don’t do anything to others which you don’t want for yourself. moreover, the spiritual sadhaks try their best not to create new karmas. because one has to clear all the karmas before getting enlightened.

Indigestion and diet

Indigestion and diet

What's up folks? I hope you are enjoying the rains. Pleasant drizzles have cooled down the weather and isn't it blissful? When you are accompanied with steaming masala tea and onion/potato Pakoras. Just imagining this brings joy. But friends, no matter how good it seems, please be careful.

Otherwise, it might happened to you like it happened to the character in the movie 'Aamhi Satpute (the Marathi movie आम्ही सातपुते)’ who dreamed of getting married to his cousin. Upon upsetting his stomach the character was advised by doctor to take light diet and the oversmart character rationalised that oil is lighter than water because it floats on water and similarly, a pamoja is lighter than oil because it floats on oil and thus, he had six plates of pakora and bread.

Now, comes the amusing part. In monsoon, all of us have relatively weaker digestive power compared to other seasons. This results in indigestion, nausea, flatulence which if neglected can further result in serious elements such as arthritis because of Vaatdushti (वातदुष्टी).

So if the food is not digested properly it stays as indigested food in the gastric canal. Today, we will try to understand more about indigestion. In the ancient, ayurvedic text - Yogratnakar, indigestion is defined as follows

अविपक्वो अग्निमान्द्येन यो रसः स निगद्यते।
रोगाणां प्रथमो हेतुः सर्वेषामामसंज्ञया।।

Weak digestive system results in some part of ingested food remains undigested, which is called as ‘आम’. ‘आम’ is first cause of most diseases.

There are two main causes of getting indigestion-
Physical issues / wrong habits
drinking plenty amount of milk
Eating food objects which are havi ng exactly opposite qualities (eg. Milk and Fish… Milk is dole and fish is hot as their specific qualities)
Always having food in irregular quantity irrespective of appetite
To control natural excretory urges
Taking inadequate sleep
Sleeping or sitting at one place for long time
Keep working till late night.
Psychological
Being jealous
Being afraid
Being greedy
Being sad
Being worried (psychologically and economically)

Because of above mentioned emotions food does not get digested. This causes indigestion. So, one has to eat food peacefully and happily.

Feeling weak or lethargic
Heaviness in body and abdomen
Nausea
Swelling over chicks and eyes
Belching with the taste of food consumed recently
Constipation
Giddiness

All of these symptoms indicate indigestion of food. We should visit our Ayurvedic doctor at this moment immediately. In case of indigestion one may find either one symptom or a combination of above mentioned symptoms or all of them. These symptoms on their combination help in identifying different types of ‘Doshdushti (दोषदुष्टी)’. Thus, while eating food one should have good self-control in terms of emotions as well as food intake.
Here, I am giving a list which may help you up to some extent. There are some food ingredients which help to counter act on the constipation caused some other food material.

Though as per given list some food products or material can overcome ill effects of overeating of some food products, one has to rush to the family doctor if the symptoms are critical. Don't keep on trying different medicines on the basis of Google or Whatsapp messages.

This list itself might have given you idea of the depth of our ancient Ayurveda. Ayurveda not only gives treatment but also provides proper Do’s and Don’ts. Ayurveda guides at the every moment of life even at the time of cooking also. Just have an example, while cooking sooran as a vegetable we must add dry kokam and jagerry so that it will not harm ur digestive system. Many of you must be recollecting their childhood memories of getting their stomach upset caused by excessive sweets. Then your mother or granny must have given you Karela juice (bitterguard juice) or ginger juice to regularize your digestion. So, we must take care of our health by following Do’s don't s mentioned in Ayurveda, isn't it?

Why the Wise go Veg with Yoga

Why the Wise go Veg with Yoga

You are what you eat. That’s the principle yogic approach which takes a holistic view of human health, on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. The ancient treatise of Patanjali Yoga Sutra speaks of the concept of 'Ahimsa' (non-violence), as one of the core values of yoga. The ethical discussion on non-vegetarianism, cruelty to animals, animal-to-man diseases, toxin secretion during slaughter, and lack of economics in meat production are undeniable truths. Apart from this the human body and its digestive system is naturally designed for a vegetarian diet. Today, the entire debate between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is practically resting in favor of the former with research and statistics available in bookshops and on the internet. Simply stated, vegetarian food is easy to digest; contains antioxidants, fiber, an array of vitamins; low in calories, sugar, fat, and reduces your chances of getting diabetes, heart disease, obesity, hypertension and almost all cancers. Numerous sites including The American Dietetic Association, World Cancer Research Fund and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey contain a wealth of knowledge on this. If that doesn’t alarm you away from non-vegetarianism, let’s focus a bit on a fascinating aspect of yoga which speaks of food.

Better food makes better mood.

Ayurveda classifies food not as proteins or carbohydrates etc. but according to its effect on the body and mind. It classifies food based on three qualities or gunas that governs human life – sattva, rajas and tamas.

1. Tamasic food creates lethargy or sluggishness
2. Rajasic food creates activity or restlessness
3. Sattvic food, which consists of vegetarian fare, creates lightness, energy and positivity
These three qualities are present in our body in varying degree and have a direct influence on us, our moods, emotions and consequent health. There is an ancient Ayurvedic proverb which sums it up- “When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need.”

Scientifically speaking, we need food for two reasons: as fuel to produce energy to exist (prana or life energy) and as raw material to regenerate the body. Yoga says that our system is a seamless blend of the body, mind and spirit. An irregularity in the body affects the mind and unpleasantness in the mind manifests as an ailment in the body. It has been observed that the practice of yoga, accompanied with a sattvic diet, can truly create wonders. This is because when one does Yoga,  pranayama (breathing techniques), and complements it with sattvic food, the prana levels in the body increase. This creates a lighter, positive, happy and harmonious state of being. In fact, many yoga practitioners have experienced that one of the major impacts of yoga is an increased awareness of their body and mind. This allows for their natural progression towards sattvic high-prana generating food choices. It is almost as though the body desires to return to its innate mechanism which is attuned to a vegetarian diet. The best encapsulation of this is by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Founder of The Art of Living, who says, "When you become subtle in your mind and go deeper in your heart, you turn vegetarian naturally.” Another marvelous benefit of a daily dose of yoga, coupled with a vegetarian diet, is that it is one of the easiest ways to stay fit, look younger and get that glowing skin and hair. But it would be prudent to allow more celebrated vegetarian yogis to make that all-consuming point.

Go on the special Mood and Energy Enhancers Diet for the next 30-days. Include only sattvic vegetarian food in
your diet plans and let us know how you feel. Examine your energy level, moods, emotions, and thoughts. We'd like to hear from you. For better experience, add 30-minutes of yoga too.
