Today 5th March is Sudarshan Kriya Day 

On this day in 1982, the world renowned corner stone of every single Happiness Programme, Sudarshan Kriya was born in Shimoga, India.

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji, founded this technique as he sat for a period of 10 days in silence on the banks of the Bhandra River. With only a few participants at the time Gurudev Sri Sri taught this technique to them - and the rest is history.

Now, 42 years later, Sudarshan Kriya has transformed the lives of millions in 180 countries, from people in rural areas, to city workers, students to housewives/husbands and even to nearly half a million prison inmates - all who have been. 

Upon visiting Shimoga in 2004 Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji shares why he introduced Sudarshan Kriya to the world - “I had already travelled around the world. I taught Yoga, Asanas, Meditation. But still I was concerned about how to make people live a happy life. After being in silence for 10 days, knowledge of Sudarshan Kriya came to me. Nature knows what to give and when to give.

When we started that time, the course used to begin early in the morning and would go on until 10:30 PM - 11 PM. So some people would not turn up the next day. The rest would go and bring them back. I would keep silent and everybody would also keep silent. Then people started having beautiful experiences from the second day. Our first course was here in Shimoga.

Over a period of time I felt that this was a little too much for some people and so we split the course into the Basic course (currently the Happiness Programme) and Advance course (currently the Silence Course or Silence Retreat). You know I don’t feel like I ever left this place”.

Sudarshan Kriya Changed My Life

There was a time in my life when the only thing that used to go on in my mind; how to commit suicide. 
I was tired and frustrated and I just wanted life to end. I used to keep thinking of several ways by which I could commit suicide. One day I was told about the Art of Living Part 1 course. I went for it and believe me, after doing the Kriya only once; I fell in love with it. When I came back home after the course my mother was very surprised to see me. She said that I am looking cheerful and energetic. I told her that I am going to make Guruji my spiritual Guru. Since then I became a dedicated devotee. The Sudarshan Kriya has all by itself changed my life. Earlier, I used to feel very tired, lazy and lethargic. I used to get irritated very soon and even the smallest things would irritate me. I would not talk much; just remain silent all the time. My mother would also wonder why I always looked tired and pale. She would always tell me to talk and get some liveliness in me. But at that time all these things were impossible for me. After doing the Kriya each and every single day, without fail, I was filled with a lot of positive energy, due to which I am still living and now I enjoy life. Now whenever I get a problem, I don’t crib about it but instead, I only focus on how to solve that particular problem. Things which used to irritate me earlier don’t bother me at all. Life has become better, easier and happier. All this was possible only because of the Sudarshan Kriya and Guruji’s Blessings.

I want to share my personal experience of doing regular pranayama called Sudarshan Kriya taught by Art of Living. I used to suffer from recurrent acidity. Three years back I learnt Sudarshan Kriya and I have never ever had this problem again. Same experience is of my wife as well. Very recently my Father in Law and Mother in law had visited Pune. They also learnt Sudarshan Kriya and almost like magic after a few days when they visited the Doctor for regular checkup my Mother in law who had been suffering from High BP was told that her tests were Normal. Again after 45 days when she visited for check up the Doctor announced her to be completely OK. I have also have met people who have told me that their Sugar problem has vanished and another person told me that her Arthritis disappeared. These are some common health issues which people suffer from. I want to recommend Sudarshan Kriya to one and all because of my own personal experiences.

Sudarshan is made up of two words, His and Darshan. Suu means beautiful and visually.
The meaning is to see the Action that means, a good job. Thus,
Its full meaning is to see oneself or look good.
The most important and integral part of the basic course of the Art of Living is the Sudarshan Kriya. The knowledge and practice of Sudarshan Kriya, are carried out, during the course, of course, to develop. It is a very specialized technique and is completely practical and most importantly,
The result of the Kriya experience is immediately received by the student.
Sudarshan Kriya, is a special and sequential technique for breathing. It is an unexplained respiratory process. In Sanskrit, its means true, philosophy has a meaning of vision and action means purification. Who uses, this action works to make it pure.
It is in the Sudarshan Kriya, during the workshop of the Art of Living, where the person's breath is controlled by the sound of 'Sau Hum'. 'Sleeping means breathing and' we 'means: that we should stop breathing. There are several steps, throughout the verse. This rythm; It has been provided by Nature since birth, but as we age, they are influenced by negative thoughts and frustrated feelings and depressions. Our body and mind can reach their goals,
it separates, and when the system of nature is broken, our lives are also stressed and affected, one becomes sad. Sudarshan Kriya reorganizes our breathing and returns it to us in a situation easily accessible by nature. Almost all the trainees involved in this work of Sudarshan Kriya included in the workshop of the Art of Living, the smallest of Sudarshan Kriya,
They have experienced and it is a direct experience, a direct experience. To get good results from Sudarshan Kriya, it is necessary to practice a few minutes, at home regularly.

Recently, 2 months ago I came in contact with the Art of Living through my friends. I did a four days YES! course in Itahari and had an astonishing and enlightening experience. Specially Sudarshan Kriya had left a remarkable impact on me. While doing it for the first time, I felt like it was healing me from inside.

l used to have a lot of pimples, I used different medicines for long time for treatment but nothing worked as per my expectation. Then I decided to stop the medicine. My pimples were getting worse day by day. The magic happened here when I started doing my Sudarshan Kriya regularly, I noticed that my pimples started fading away without any use of medicine. I am so grateful that I feel like regular practice of Sudarshan Kriya is healing me mentally as well as physically.

Sudarshan Kriya and meditation improve my condition

I feel really blessed to have been selected by my marvelous Guru to walk on the path. My story is one that will kindle the lamp of faith in the hearts of many. I had been suffering since 2009, with severe immobilizing pain, swelling and burning in my left thigh & abdomen. This was the result of multiple failed surgeries, which caused grave damage to the nerves. Medically this condition is a post-operative femoral Neuropathy at inguinal ligament. It results in complete limitation in living, because of which there arises a feeling of disappointment and helplessness regarding the future course of one’s life. On very little exertion, I would experience immense pain, and lack of physical strength to perform normal everyday activities. Allopathic doctors said that there was not much hope but still attempts could be made for a fourth surgery, where the chances of recovery and improvement would be very bleak. But having faced tremendous problems in earlier such attempts, I decided not to go ahead with the surgery. I continued with homeopathic medicines from a very renowned practitioner, which resulted in a little relief. But life was still far from normal. Moreover, the future was completely dark. Things would improve a little and again fall back in their original poor condition. I felt that only when I did the Sudarshan Kriya ( taught in the art of living basic course) and meditation, my condition would show considerable improvement. I also observed that, by the grace of Guruji, every course that I attended, be it Advanced, Guru Pooja or Pre-TTC (teachers training course) , helped in bringing about a positive change in me. I personally could not believe that things were actually turning over for me. But still, the same problems used to recur every few months. But this time around, during May 2013, the problem took a bitter turn. Medicines were not working, and we were completely clueless about what should be done next. At that time, I got the Master’s call for doing the TTC, which was to happen in July 2013. To travel all the way to Bangalore seemed like an impossible task. But yet, something pushed me. Something inside me made me want to go. It was like a calling from the Divine. In-spite of all the suffering, I decided to take the course at the Bangalore Ashram. We had kept it a secret at home, from all my relatives in Kolkata. Finally, with complete surrender to my Guru, I went to the Ashram. Freedom And Surrender Unbelievably, my condition started improving from the start of the journey. I could handle physical exertion, movement, and exercises. I was also able to do justice to my Seva (Service) and Sadhana (Practice). It was amazing how I was feeling completely normal. I had truly longed for this feeling. I had forgotten the taste of being physically fit in the past few years. The vast extent of discomfort and problems had almost taken my life to a state of compromise. But at the Ashram, I could feel the healing happening. I could feel myself recovering. I finally experienced the sense of a normal life. I felt healthy and happy. It’s just unexplainable. I returned from the Ashram as an AOL Teacher, with full zeal, energy and enthusiasm, hale and hearty. This was truly beyond my expectation. Sudarshan Kriya has transformed my life over the last decade.

It is difficult to describe in words how Sudarshan Kriya has transformed my life over the last decade. I was in my early 20s and severely asthmatic. So much so that it was a burden even to walk to the college from my hostel building on some days. I had tried almost every possible medication and home remedy, but it was still difficult to manage. I had a few other minor health problems and a really bad temper. I used to be frustrated all the time. The first month after I did the Sudarshan Kriya was magical. I realized that I was carrying so much emotional baggage only when it got released. I had never imagined that the key to all my health problems could be so simple and cost-effective! I became a happy person. Over the years, the practice has helped me gain strength, has given me hope and made me the kind of person that I always wanted to be. Experiencing His Love as Blessings during the Sudarshan Kriya

In 2006. I did my Part –I course, but was not much inclined towards the Art of Living. In the May of 2006, Guruji had come to inaugurate the Texas Ashram. I was a student then and just got to know somehow that He was coming to San Antonio. I told my mother about it and told her that I won’t go as it would cost 100 bucks, and I had no mode of travel as well. My mother pushed me to go, calling me couple of times from India. So after much deliberation, I finally decided to go. As I was new to America, I did not have a phone or a car and nor did I know anybody from whom I could ask for help. I just called an organizer whom I call Sarah. She said a lady would pick me up from a bus stop. So I asked one of my friends to drop me at the bus station near my school. The Ashram was 4 hours away from my school. I reached San Antonio after 3 hours. I had no way to contact the lady who was supposed to pick me up. Suddenly, an old gentleman and a lady came out of a vintage car. They received me with great warmth. Three other students had come from prestigious universities to meet Sri Sri. We all ate at a subway. A couple, Sarah and Brian, owned a big mansion where I was supposed to stay. It was beautiful with a Ranch and Horses. I was to share a bedroom with two other women at night. One of them, an old lady, offered to sleep on the ground, giving me a princess’ bed. I felt extremely grateful for her kind gesture. Next morning we were ready by 7:00 a.m. and were served the best breakfast ever. Sarah drove us on a cloudy rainy day to the Ashram. Art Of Living Center In Texas It seemed as if it were the day of the birth of Lord Krishna, as Guruji was coming to the Ashram. I was just going with the flow, like a baby, with complete surrender and faith that nothing untoward will happen to me. I realized that Guruji was behind all this. On reaching the Ashram, I experienced ‘Celebration’ in its purest form. I saw people dancing, singing Bhajans (Devotional songs). People from different cultural backgrounds had come together and were basking in peace and joy. Then that moment arrived when Gurudev Himself entered the hall. Wow! What a moment that was! After chatting a bit, He made us do some activities which were great fun and relaxing too. After sometime, everybody was given a chance to meet Guruji and take His blessing. I was just so excited to personally meet Sri Sri. I touched His feet and took His blessings. I felt bliss. After lunch, Guruji took us around the Ashram and to a rivulet nearby. As evening descended, everybody was singing. I too sang. Guruji’s Birthday was celebrated. Later Sarah came and gave me the cake which Guruji ate. I was astonished. Not just that, Gurudev also made us see all the pictures of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations. I was dumbstruck at seeing the auras in the pictures and realized the enormous Power of the Divine. I felt very grateful. The celebrations then concluded. After Gurudev left, we came back to Sarah’s mansion. The old lady who had picked me up when I came to San Antonio, took me graciously to her house, fed me, and made me sleep in her bed, as her own daughter. The next morning, she dropped me to the bus station. I was taken care of just like a princess. After that came an interview call at 5:00 p.m. in the evening on the Friday I came back from the Ashram, for an internship which I was trying for. I got the Internship. Guruji returned the amount I spent, 75 times through my internship. I thought it was only Grace. I was worried about spending the money for the Ashram trip, but my Master took care of it in His own way. What Amazing Grace! But the most important of it all – Within 15 days from the time I came back from the Ashram, after taking His blessings, I started experiencing His Love as Blessings during the Sudarshan Kriya .It was like an endless nectar flowing. It was then that I experienced the greatest Grace of His. I am so grateful to Gurudev for those 2 weeks of pure eternal Bliss. He takes care of us as if we are Kings and Queens. I know that His Grace will keep flowing on us. Love you Guruji. Jai Gurudev.

I had done my Part 1 (Basic) Course in January 2006. After that I did my DSN Course, Part 2 Course, Advance Meditation Course, Sahaj Samadhi Course with Guruji. For me the Art of Living Courses (or even an entrance/basic course) is not just a stress elimination technique but a door towards heaven, a path taking you closer to the divine, to yourself! Even in the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna has said: Whatever spiritual practices you do in this life, its good effects are carried forward in your next life; it does not lapse. I knew the Art of Living Course have benefited me a lot and I wanted my family members to experience the same bliss. If not all the courses, then at least the basic course, at least they should experience the magic of Sudarshan Kriya (breathing and meditation technique). I don’t even expect them to practice it daily, but at least complete the Part 1 course. Just doing the Part 1 Course is good enough. The Guru Grace is such that the 1st Sudarshan Kriya itself burns our past Karmas. I gave my 100% to involve them into the Art of Living, to make them do the Part 1 Course, but somehow they had their own excuse of not doing it. My family includes my elder sister, younger sister, mom, dad and aunt. While my elder sister had done the Part 1 course (interestingly she had voluntarily registered for the course in place of some other participant who had to cancel his seat at the last moment), the others were still hesitant to do the course. My mom would say that she had to look after household work and that 5 days was a long duration for a course. At the same time, she said she was afraid of getting too much into spirituality. My younger sister was least interested in meditation. My aunt had her own closed mind concepts. Convincing my father was out of question. Stumbling Into Infinity In 2012, one day, my sister, who is very fond of reading books, asked me if I had a book which she can read. She had finished reading all her collection of fiction/non-fiction books, so I gave her ‘Stumbling into Infinity’, a brilliant book written by Michael Fischman about his spiritual journey. She read and completed that book in 3 days! She loved the book, and asked for more. I gave her ‘Narada Bhakti Sutra’ (a book by Sri Sri giving an inspiring discourse on the Bhakti Sutras of Narada – Aphorisms of Love ) which she quickly finished. Then she came up to me and said ‘I want to do the Part 1 Course!’ My joy knew no bounds. I ‘announced’ at home that on 10th October 2012, which was also my mom’s birthday, they would all (sister, aunt and mom) be doing the Part 1 Course. Of course, my mother and aunt were hesitant but then I was adamant too. On 10th October 2012, the course was supposed to start at 6:30 am, and just 2 hours before, my aunt suffered a life threatening fall and broke her ribs. The course got canceled (None of them could do the course because of this incident) I started wondering, why this happened on the very day of the course. While Guruji himself says ‘Bring everyone to knowledge’ then why is He not letting them do the course. We hospitalized my aunt. The Art of Living teacher also helped us a lot in midst of all this. I sought blessings for my aunt from wherever possible. My only wish was to not let her die before doing the Part 1 Course. Slowly and steadily she started recovering. The Part 1 fees I had paid for all three was still with the teacher, which I let her keep because I wanted them to do the course from that teacher only (interestingly she was my Part 1 teacher too!). Incidentally, during that time even my teacher was going through some personal problems, which kept on delaying the course. Sri Sri Giving Darshan It was March 2013 and 5 months had passed since the accident. My aunt had recovered 90%. Suddenly a thought came into my mind. I decided to use the same technique that helped my sister to get convinced to do the course. I purchased three different Art of Living books written by Sri Sri and casually asked my mom and aunt to read it. Perhaps that would instill that seed of faith in them. They read and completed the book. On 16th April 2013, my sister saw a post on Facebook. It said ‘Do Part 2 course with Guruji’. Reading that she secretly prayed ‘Wow some people are so lucky to do the part 2 course with Guruji, and here even the Part 1 is not happening!’. That evening, my teacher came home as a surprise. She asked if it was possible to start Part 1 Course from tomorrow, 17th April. I said YES! Immediate calculation showed that all three of them would experience the Sudarshan Kriya on 18th April 2013, which was my sister’s birthday! Finally that day came, when all 3 of them completed their Part 1 Course. Today, they practice the Sudarshan Kriya daily, without fail, and the best part is we go for the weekly follow-up together! Special thanks to all the Blessers who blessed my aunt, my dear friends who kept my family in their prayers. Looking back at 2006, who would have predicted that this day would come where me, mom, sister and aunt would go to the same teacher and complete the Part 1 course. Guru Grace makes it all happen! I have devoted 30 minutes of every day to do the Sudarshan Kriya

I was only 16 when I did my first Art of Living course, Yes+. I was a medical student suffering from clinical depression. I had become a poor student, which was surprising because I was very good academically until the 10th grade. It had been a week since I finished the course and I practiced the Sudarshan Kriya every day. I wanted to finish the 40 day challenge I got from my course teacher. My midterm result had just come in, too, and I had failed the Physics exam because of which a parent teacher meeting for me had been scheduled. My teacher, who was unsupportive and bias towards me because I did not take classes from her private coaching center, gave me my expulsion notice. This notice left me devastated and I knew I couldn’t control anything after this point. My parents would be shameful. Unable to comprehend how to save myself, I decided to commit suicide. It was a lot of pressure. I wrote my goodbye letter for my parents and my boyfriend, handed them to my best friend, and bought a chemical used to kill pests to ingest it that night. And that’s when I got messages about a Satsang happening that evening. I wanted to have one happy evening so I decided to attend it. During the entire Satsang, I kept my emotions and pain hidden and sang with others. After a short meditation, a volunteer and friend approached me and asked me what was wrong. I was shocked at how she understood what I was going through even though I tried to hide it. I couldn’t help myself and the truth came pouring out of me, I confided in her. I still remember how she calmed me down by telling me that Guruji is there for me. I have done the course, I am doing the kriya, so now all of this is a part of me. She talked to me so nicely but I kept thinking, how will he help me if I have never called out to him? After reaching home, I opted to do my kriya instead of taking the poison. I hoped for the best as I went to the scheduled meeting the following day and couldn’t believe it when I heard that the meeting was cancelled. I realized that I am being looked after. I felt gratitude instantly. It wasn’t as bad as I hoped it would be and I got the chance to do better. From that day onwards, I have devoted 30 minutes of every day to do the Sudarshan Kriya. It gives me the strength to tackle every obstacle. Since then, it’s only been a caravan of miracles just started happening in my life. Jai Guru Dev.
