How stress affects your body and brain?

Q: How stress affects your body and brain?

Stress is a silent killer. Normally, your body and mind are enabled to give you multiple signals before the effects of stress become extreme and fatal. The question is -  have you been paying attention?

What are the effects of stress on your physical and mental health? What does it do to your body and brain? We’ll explore the physical and psychological effects of stress here along with the results of some research studies on stress.

Stress is, undoubtedly, a part of every aspect of modern-day living today. You could be:

1 spending an hour commuting to work
2 preparing for an important presentation
3 waiting outside the examination hall where your child is giving a college entrance exam
4 expecting results of your cholesterol test at the doctor’s office

In each and every scenario stress promises to be your constant companion - though not in the same way or at the same level. We all know stress is dangerous and can even be fatal. Let’s first examine how our body defends itself from it.

The connection between sexuality and spirituality.

Dear Gurudev, can you please speak about the connection between sexuality and spirituality.

Sex is the origin from where everything is born. In the Orient, it is honored as divine. Sexuality is in the second chakra, and then you move upward to the other chakras. So it is just part of the process.
Spirituality does not disown anything or disassociate with anything. Spirituality encompasses all aspects of life. In fact, spirituality uplifts one from sex to higher consciousness.
Sex is being attracted to a part of the body and getting some stimulation from it. The goal of sex is to find joy, and not sex itself. It is to get into the moment, forget about everything and find joy, and spirituality provides that joy, which is not gotten through some act, but beyond the senses.
In the Bhagavad Gita, there is a saying, “Buddhi grahyam atindriyam”, it is the joy that can be grasped by the intellect, but is acquired from beyond the senses, and that is the bliss of the self. For example, when you meet a dear one after a long time, or even when you think of them, something happens inside you. You feel a deep sense of love. It is not associated with touch or smell, or any of the physical attributes; the senses are not involved. The thought or a feeling rekindles something very deep inside and you feel very happy and joyful. Nothing else and no other sensory pleasure can give you this joy. It is said that one moment of Samadhi (a state of deep meditation) is a 1000 times more joyful than the joy you might get from sex. It is so much more!

Gurudev, how can one get out of the past sex impressions?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Your trying to get out of it makes it more difficult (deepens the tendency or the impression). What you need to do is practice more pranayama and relax. Then you will see that gradually on your own, you will overcome it and these thoughts will not disturb you anymore. They will not come at all.

How can I stop sexual desires?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Through higher fulfillment. It’s like, kids crave for cotton candy and chocolate, but when they grow up they automatically they have no such cravings. It just drops off. Similarly, pranayamas and a higher goal in life will help.
When you have a lot of work to do, sex is not a botheration at the time.
Just ask any student, during exam time are they bombarded with thoughts of sex? They’ll say no. For that whole month when they have to achieve something, their mind is fully focused on it. Not once the thought comes during exam time. They have a bundle of books to read and to prepare. So engaging yourself in some creative activity is helpful.
Pleasure always makes you run towards it first and then later on makes you run away from it. This is its nature. First you crave for it and you go towards it and then later on, you go away from it because it becomes too much to handle. Yoga is that which makes you centered, it stabilizes you. When you are stable and centered, if pleasure is there, you enjoy it, if it’s not there, you don’t mind it, it’s not occupying your mind. It’s not a craving that bothers you.

Gurudev, why does someone sometimes have attractions towards people of the same sex? Why is being homosexual or bisexual such a taboo?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
I think it is no longer a taboo in many parts of the world now. In the past it was, and people were executed because of their sexual preferences. People simply don’t understand that each one of us is made of both mother and father. You have qualities of both in you. Of the feminine and masculine energies that you are made up of, sometimes one dominates and sometimes, the other dominates and that’s how these types of changes happen in people. Someone thinks they are straight and after fifty years or so, they suddenly discover that they have attraction towards the same sex. Then they get so perturbed and their mind goes haywire. They are simply not able to comprehend.
The other way is also true. They are gay from the very beginning but you never know, sometimes preferences change. So it is better not to label oneself for lifetime and feel bad about it. Even if you label yourself, do it happily. But don’t label someone else and accuse them because it is just a play or display of energies inside of you. And I want you to rise above identification of the body because you are genderless. Your body has a gender but your consciousness has got no gender.
Love is the nature of consciousness. That is why sometimes, irrespective of the body’s gender, consciousness gets attracted or your mental attraction goes in that direction. So it is wrong to blame oneself and blame others.
What you need to do is realize that you are scintillating light. You are not just a piece of flesh, bones and blood. You are light. When you get this understanding, then you will be free from whatever emotional turbulences you have. Serenity dawns in you and you get a better understanding of yourself.
There are so many people who discover their sexuality and get so upset or assertive that they start hating the entire society. We should get over these extreme reactive tendencies in the mind and realize that we are not just the body but scintillating, sparkling joy and consciousness.
People are understanding now that homosexuality is not a disease as it was thought some time back. Today people see that it is just a tendency. It is just the energy that plays that role. Sometimes, the male energy is dominant though you are a female and sometimes, the female energy is dominant though you are a male. All this is possible.

Gurudev, I want to be honest with my parents about my sexuality. Yet my fear of losing their love and support has been stopping me from being honest with them. Do I need to be compassionate and not burden my parents? Please guide me to a solution.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
You don’t have to label yourself as gay or a lesbian. You don’t need to put on a label. These are tendencies which come and go.

You should label yourself as Divine light. This label is much better than putting a label about your sexuality because it may change.

Many people get married and after that they discover that they have different tendencies. And for many gay people, sometime later, even their preferences change. I have seen many gay people and lesbians getting married, settling in life and having kids. I have seen the other way also. So all possibilities are open. What is the need for you to right away label yourself? There are some who are bisexual.
What are you going to achieve by telling your parents? Is it going to make them any happier? When they are not going to be happy, what is the point in telling them about it? You think about it.
Honesty is one thing. First you should be honest to yourself. What is your state right now? Be honest with yourself. You don’t have to pretend and be what you are not, at the same time you don’t have to put a bomb where people cannot accept it. Tell them gradually. Prepare them.
You have to study the situation. How fragile are your parents? How unhappy are they already and how much more unhappy they will become by your saying that? Is it worth being that honest to them and making them miserable? You need to judge all these pros and cons.
Suppose your parents are forcing you to get married then you tell them, 'No, I have no interest in this, I have a different interest'. Otherwise why do you have tell them?

Be honest at such times, otherwise you will make another person's life (who you marry) miserable. If your mother is already very aged and is burdened with a lot of other things and you be honest just for your pride and tell her something, and she loses her night’s sleep and it affects her health, what is the point. What does it serve?
In the ancient system it has been beautifully said, 'Satyam bruyat priyam bruyat na bruyat satyam apriyam', speak the truth but speak the pleasant truth. Don’t speak unpleasant truth and don’t speak pleasant lies.

Something may be pleasant, but if it is a lie, don’t speak that. Don’t speak unpleasant truth or pleasant lies. This is the ancient path. The perfect balance.
So use your sense of discrimination and gently prepare them if you want to tell them, and if it’s going to serve some purpose.
Rise above the body consciousness. Know that you are light. You’re scintillating consciousness. Every cell of your body is awakened with consciousness, light, love and life. Focus on that.

A member of the audience asked a question which was inaudible)
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Why do you think sex is negative? Through sex only everybody has come.

'Sex is the original sin', this is what people have been made to believe in the past. Sex is not a sin. Sex is a basis. Any plant, human, animal, anything comes out of it. That is okay.

But there is a difference between bliss and sex. Sex is energy draining and bliss is energy conserving. One is energy consuming the other is energy conserving. That is the thing.

Sex, drugs, alcohol, how does one escape them? They are all over the place.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Just this thought that we want to escape and pull people out of it, will do it.

Today, can you all take a vow that you will not even turn and look in that direction? If someone is even tempted, send them to me, or to any of our YES!+ teachers. They will give them better intoxication, an intoxication that will not come down at all. They can get a better high! What do you call it? A better kick? We can get you a better kick!

How do we curb our desires to watch porn, which is so freely available these days?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Pranayama! When you do yoga, pranayama, meditation, these tendencies change, your nature changes. You know that you are not just a body, you are spirit; scintillating spirit. With the help of these practices, you find yourself elevated to another level.

I see people look so happy even without doing yoga. Is it my illusion or is it their past life merits?

Q: Gurudev I see people look so happy even without doing yoga. Is it my illusion or is it their past life merits?

Why do you bother about others? You look into yourself. If you can be happy without anything, be happy and if you need to do whatever you need to do to be happy then do that.
This analysis will not lead you to anywhere. Yes! Many people could be happy with their merits. Some may look happy but may not be really happy. Some are happy but may not appear to be happy. What is the point of you doing any research on it? If it is for any benefit then I am ok with that also. At least you be happy and do what you want to do.

Q: Guruji! I used to get into bliss every time I used to meditate. After marriage and kids, it is not happening. What really went wrong?

Look! Do not blame marriage for this. There are people who are married and happy and there are people who are single and unhappy. Yes! There are responsibilities, challenges. In spite of all these responsibilities, you should take some time. And a baby is not active all the time. In fact, small babies sleep most of the time. When they sleep, you meditate. Who can stop?

Q: Why is the tradition in India that woman has to go to stranger’s house and take care of his parents and not hers. This keeps bothering me.

Well you should have been born in Kerala or Tripura where there is a patriarchal society. But if the same question your husband ask you then why should I leave my house and go and stay in my wife's house and take care of her parents? My dear! If you can take care of your people, you can take care of others also. Perhaps it is easier to take care of stranger than your own people.

Q: Life is wonderful and this world is amazing but sometimes I feel all this is pointless. This feeling keeps coming back. What should I do?

Very Good! You are getting matured. You are getting dispassionate about everything. And when you see everything is pointless, this should give you more joy, not depression. If you see everything is pointless and still you are happy and you want to continue doing it, then you are on the right track.
Games are always pointless but games are played because games give you joy. What is the point of a man playing a ball and hitting it by bat here and there and wait for someone to throw again? Totally pointless. Waste of time. Here I totally agree with Bernard Shaw who says that Cricket is a game where eleven fools play and eleven thousand watches. Any game you take it. Watching any movie is even pointless. If you see in that angle, all games are pointless but we still play. Right! Life is also called a Leela! Ramleela is a game. Krishna Leela is a game and your Leela is a game.

Q: In deep gratitude Gurudev! Just want to know what I can do for you?

I think you should keep this question and time to time you get different ideas for all that. Do seva, do sadhana, do satsang and work for all the projects. There are so many projects in Art of Living. We need many more such places where people can come and experience bliss and joy. We need lighthouses of happiness. You can create. You can be in the team. You can promote our books, tapes and knowledge and products you can promote them. In any way, you serve our society our world. Plant more trees, be part of river rejuvenation programs. Yuvacharya, village programs. If you want to do, there are so many projects. Think about it.
Become a teacher, plan to be a teacher and if you are already a teacher then teach courses. At least once in a month.

Q: While decision making, when to use our heart and when to use our brains?

I think you should use both. Sometimes it could be a cocktail. You cannot really bifurcate as young children. In adults, it’s a different case but as a kid in you, it is a mixer.

Q: Is it ok to be emotionally dependent on someone?

As a teenager, you should not think about emotional dependency. Both will put you in problem. If you think you are emotionally independent then it is not true because you are dependent on your parents, your friends. In this, if you try to be independent then you will come out to be a rebellious and arrogant person. On the other hand, if you think you are emotionally dependent on everybody then you become too mushy-mushy and at the drop of a head you start crying and throwing tantrums and all unnecessary and unfruitful drama will happen which nobody will like to watch. So teenage is the age when you are just developing your emotions. This is a time to focus on your studies and develop skills.

Q: Gurudev, if someone uses bad language or abuses me, I get depressed very easily and sometimes I also think of committing suicide. How can I overcome this?

Absolutely not. Promise me you will never even move in that direction. You have brilliant future. You have the whole nation. You have so much to work on this planet. How can you even think of these small pity things? Even if you fail in your exams, never think of that. Let everyone humiliate you. You know God is with you. Your Gurudev is with you. So many friends and your parents are with you. You should never make your parents cry.
I promise all your difficulties will simply go away. Don't worry.
I know you have to go through tough times. Humiliation is needed for blossoming. A small rose flower, you put gobar (cow dung) which smells bad, you put manure which does not look nice. But you put foul smell to a plant and fragrance comes out of it. So in your life little humiliation, little difficulties, little failure are like manure. And you come out like most beautiful, most fragrant Rose.
Never mind people insulting you. Every Insult is like manure for young people to grow. Think this way and you will find really you will grow.

Q: Why do parents love the younger one more?

Because they need little more attention. They had loved you when you were young too. You should know.
You are able to walk and younger one need little more care and support. When you are not well, they take care of you one hundred percent. So you do not know their love. It is equal to both of you. I tell you they love you both the same. There is a difference in love and attention. Love is same for all but attention; if someone needs it then he gets it. Attention is time and situation bound but love is beyond that.

Q: How do I handle my fear of exams, people and failure?

Failure in exam. Never mind. If you fail in exam. So what. It is only by chance people fail. There are many great achievers on the planet who have failed many times. A great physicist failed in physics in his class many times. So don't be upset if you happened to be failed. It gives you a chance to study your subject in more depth and with more attention. Take it that way. Don't worry about people. Meditation and Yoga will help. You are one of the parts of people.
Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

If we grow lemon and tulsi in each and every house we can have good health in our country

If we grow lemon and tulsi in each and every house we can have good health in our country.

If we grow lemon and tulsi in each and every house we can have good health in our country.
You know in our country there is a shortfall in the production of pulses.
We are importing nearly 40% of the pulses and if this continues we will not have sufficient food In the future.
So we have to plant pulses in our home garden and our women can do it.

She had laid rules for herself and hence had a lot of energy.

She had laid rules for herself and hence had a lot of energy.

My Grandmother was in Papanasam.
Even at the age of 92 years, she used to do things for herself and she had a good system of eating.
Like, eating “Agathi Keerai” , on every “Dwadesi” day ( The day after ekadesi fasting) and she used to take two kinds of vegetable.
She had laid rules for herself and hence had a lot of energy.
In the next generation the energy level came down and now in our generation it is getting lower.

Being Yogi is becoming a baby again.

Being Yogi is becoming a baby again

The fact is that every child is born with spiritual knowledge and as you grow up, you start losing that.
Being Yogi is becoming a baby again. Getting in touch with your pure essence.
It is as simple as that.
You don’t need a yoga teacher.
Just look at a baby from the time it is born, to the age of three and they will teach you everything.
But you have to observe them everyday for all the three years.
The way they breathe, the way they smile.
They feel so connected with everybody.
It is we who corrupt the children and spoil their naturalness.

Vishaada be yoga?

The first chapter of Bhagavad Gita is called Vishaada Yoga. How can Vishaada be yoga?

See, yoga is interpreted in three ways.
1. Union of several herbs. Ayurveda and Ayurvedic medicines are also called yoga.
2. The combination of various planets is also called yoga. Raja Yoga, Kaal Sarpa Yoga, all these terms are used in Jyotish (astrology).
3. The union of the individual Self to the cosmic Self.

Here in Bhagavad Gita, since it is an authority on yoga, it’s the union of the small, individual Self to the Cosmic Self. When the small Self comes in contact with the big Self, first it comes with Vishaada Yoga -- Vishaada means regret. That is how yoga began there -- by regretting having jumped into the field of war; regretting the state of affairs that one is facing in life. That is Vishaada Yoga.

I think many people are stuck in this situation. Often people move into spirituality because there has been some trouble. Some problems come and they move to spirituality. And with Arjuna that was the case. He was in deep trouble, he was troubled mentally, challenged physically and so he came to Lord Krishna to find an answer for it. And so Bhagavad Gita began with Vishaada yoga.

If you see Ashtavakra Gita, it doesn’t begin with Vishaada Yoga, it begins with Jignasa Yoga. Janaka was a seeker, but Arjuna was a sufferer. Through suffering you go into yoga. Through seeking you go into yoga. And from suffering Arjuna later gets into inquisitiveness, he wants to know more. But with Janaka, it was pure seeking. It’s very interesting.

Whatever it is, you see in your life, don’t get stuck in Vishaada Yoga. You should move from there to Sankhya Yoga. Most people in the planet are in a state of regret. They are stuck in Vishaada Yoga but somewhere you have to reach the twelth chapter -- Bhakti Yoga!

Vedas Ayurveda has a similar story.

Vedas  Ayurveda has a similar story.

Q: Vedas are said to be of non-human origin. What does that mean?

Vedas are simply downloaded information. The Rishis went into deep meditation and what they saw and heard they started sharing. There is a beautiful story that I would like to share with you -- Vedavyasa went to the creator and asked him to please give him knowledge. The creator pointed to a shining mountain and said, "That is knowledge, whatever you can grab you can take". So what he could grab with his hands, that is what the Vedas are today.

More than one thousand saints went into deep meditation and whatever they cognized are the Vedas. Ayurveda has a similar story. There were 88,000 saints gathered in a place. They wanted to bring health to the society and so they all gathered to meditate. They needed someone to write down what they cognized and so one of the Rishis, Rishi Bharatwaja volunteered to not meditate and write down what the other saints downloaded while meditating. Today, it is a perfect science – which herb will affect what part of the body. It is a material medica of an entire species not just human beings. It is amazing. The more you go into it, the more you will find the knowledge amazing.

Importance of Ayurveda , Yoga , Meditation and Sudarshan Kriya

Importance of Ayurveda

The practice of Ayurveda can truly enhance the quality of your life.
Ayurveda is the study of life.
Ayur is life and Ved means to know.
According to Ayurveda, life or existence is not a rigid compartment, but a harmonious flow.
Even the five elements (earth, water, air, ether and fire) of which the whole universe is made of, are not tight compartments of defined objects.
They flow into one another.
Each of the elements contains the other four.
The subtlest element in us is space, which the mind is made up of, and the grossest is the earth element, which our bones, marrow, the skin and the structure are made of.
This is further divided into three Doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha. This is a way to understand our physiology, its characteristics and its reflections on the mind.
When an illness arises, it comes first in the thought form, the subtlest aspect, then the sound form, and then the light form, which is in the aura.
It is only then that the illness manifests in the body. Simple symptoms arise in the fluid form, which can be eradicated, and then it manifests in the grossest form, where it needs medication.
But with the practice of Ayurveda, the illness can be nipped in the bud.
The holistic approach of Ayurveda includes exercise, breathing and meditation.

Breath is synonymous to life.

Our life is our breath. Our breath is our life.

It is very interesting to observe the relationship between breath and the different Doshas in the body, namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

These three Doshas affect certain parts of the body more than the other parts.

For example, Vata Dosha is predominant in the lower part of the body — stomach, intestine, etc. Diseases like gastric problems and joint aches can be due to the Vata imbalance.
Kapha dosha is predominant in the middle part of the body.
Cough is mainly a result of Kapha imbalance. And Pitta affects the upper part of the body — the head. Short temper is a sign of Pitta.

How do we bring good health to our system?

The first remedy is calming the mind, coming from the subtlest aspect of creation, the ether.
If your mind is bottled with too many impressions and thoughts, and it is draining you of your resistance power, then that is where the body is preparing for some illness.
If the mind is clear, calm, meditative, and pleasant, the resistance in the body will increase and it will not allow an illness to come into it. The skillful use of breath and meditation can calm the mind.
Then comes the air element.
Breathing, aromatherapy, etc., come in this category.
Next is the light element, wherein color therapy is used to heal. Before an illness manifests in the body, you can see it in the aura of a person. And by energizing our system with the prana or life energy one can clear the aura and prevent the illness.
Next is the water element.
Fasting or purifying the system with water can bring a lot of balance in the system.
The final recourse would be medicines, medicinal herbs and surgery. All these come in when other things fail and the illness becomes inevitable.

Question - Gurudev, What is Yoga and what are the benefits of Yoga?

A disease-free body, a violence-free society, a confusion-free mind, a inhibition-free intellect, a trauma-free memory, a sorrow-free soul and a quiver-free breath is the impact that Yoga can make on your life.

If you claim that you are a Yogi, then you should have an undying smile on your face.
I would say, that is the sign of a Yogi.
Yoga makes your emotions softer and more peaceful, and you blossom in your emotions.
It brings freedom in your expression and your thought patterns. These are the real signs of Yoga.
It is not just to do with the flexibility of the body. Of course, that too is a part of Yoga.
The body becomes flexible, and the mind grows in faith and conviction.
If all this happens, know that it is the gift of Yoga, and consider yourself as a Yogi.

Many people think of the eight limbs of Yoga as a step-wise process to go level by level.
They think that one has to strive to become proficient in one level before ascending to the next.
This is not really so.
I would say that all these eight limbs or aspects of Yoga are woven together and happen simultaneously.
When a child is conceived in the womb, then all its organs are formed together.
It is not that first the feet are formed and then the arms take shape. No, it is not so.
All the limbs and organs develop together.
This is why we must take all these eight aspects or limbs of Yoga together at every step. Only then can we experience the fullness and totality of Yoga, and can bring about an extraordinary transformation and experience in our life.

About Sudarshan Kriya ?

"After doing Sudarshan kriya, many people feel so pure and so clear, so complete, because the consciousness, which was stuck in the matter, material, which is foreign to itself, got released from that and came back to its home. That is the sense of purity, feeling of purity."

"We need to do a cleansing process within ourselves. In sleep we get rid of fatigue, but the deeper stresses remain in our body. Sudarshan Kriya cleanses the system from the inside. The breath has a great secret to offer."

"Sudarshan Kriya is a breathing technique Combined with meditation.
See there is a rhythm in the nature, right? In the same way, there is a rhythm in the body. We have Physiological rhythm. Morning you have nature’s call, then you get hungry, then you feel sleepy. There is a particular bio rhythm we call. There’s a “chandasva”, what we call “chandha”. There is a rhythm in the mind also. Thought Pattern. And there is a rhythm in the emotional pattern. If you observe in one year, A particular time of the year, You feel differently. Anger, Interest or enthusiasm. They all come in certain patterns in life, in our spirit inside. Sudarshan kriya is harmonizing all these rhythms. So it brings that rhythm and takes about 6 days to learn, 2 hours each day."

About Meditation ?

Make meditation A Part Of Your Life

The higher goals in life can only be realised through a few minutes of meditation and introspection. What is meditation? Mind without agitation is meditation. Mind in the present moment is meditation. Mind that has not hesitation, no anticipation is meditation.

Mind that has come back home, to the source, is meditation. Mind that becomes no mind is meditation. Deeper you are able to rest, dynamic you will be in activity. Even though deep rest and dynamic activity are opposite values, they are complementary. Before the body leaves you, you learn to leave everything. That is freedom. What are you looking for?

Are you looking for some great joy? You are joy. I will give you an example. Have you seen dogs biting bones? You know why they bite bones? Biting wounds their mouth. It's own blood comes out and the dog feels that the bone is very tasty. Poor dog spends the whole time chewing the bone but getting nothing out of it.

Any joy you experience in life is from the depth of your self, when you let go all that you hold on to and settle down being centered in that space. That is called meditation. Actually, meditation is not an act, it is the art of doing nothing. The rest in meditation is deeper than the deepest sleep that you can ever have because in meditation you transcend all desires.

Meditation is letting go of anger from the past and all the planning for the future. Meditation is accepting this moment and living every moment totally with depth. Just this understanding and a few days of continuous practice of meditation can change the quality of our life.

The best comparison of the three states of consciousness waking, sleeping and dreaming is with the nature. Nature sleeps, awakes and dreams. It happens in a magnificent scale in existence and it is happening in a different scale in the human body. Wakefulness and sleep are like sunrise and darkness.

Dream is like the twilight in between. And meditation is like the flight to the outer space, where there is no sunset, no sunrise, nothing. I am sure that deep within, every one of you feel that you have not grown, meaning you have not changed, not grown old.

This indicates the soul in you, the depth in you, the spirit in you doesn't change, doesn't grow old, it's not aging. The body is aging but something in you is not aging. Getting in touch with that something that doesn't age brings beauty in life. That is meditation.

25 WAYS TO A BETTER LIFE

Five Tips for living happy life

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji explains
5 tips for living a happy life.

1) Ensure that you have good food, especially organic food – It is important that you have the right type and the right amount of food.

2) Pay attention to your health – A little bit of exercise, yoga and some meditation will help maintain good health.

3) Relationships – This is something that disturbs everybody, and there are many questions about it. I have three pieces of advice, one for men, one for women and one for both.

First, for women – never step on the ego of a man. A man should not be pressurized to prove himself at home.

Second secret is for men – don’t step on the emotions of women.

Third, advice for both – do not question the other’s love for you. Don’t keep asking, “Do you really love me” or say, “You don’t love me!” This sort of complaining, demanding for love is not good. Demand destroys love, in you and in the other person too.

I want each one of you to be magnanimous; come from a space of, “I’m here for you!” Just imagine, when both say these words, there is so much harmony. When both want to grab, there is disharmony. When we move from the joy of getting to the joy of giving, we have matured in life, and this is a sign of success.

4) Devote some time to knowledge and meditation.

5) Enroll yourself in a silent retreat. I would like you to take a minimum of four days in a year to go deep into silence, and discover the enormous wealth that we have all been bestowed with. We have Advanced courses from time to time; just imagine, all of us sitting together for 4 days, meditating, learning more about our self, it will make such a big difference. It’s like getting your battery fully charged. You learn about your soul, about who you really are, and why we have come to this planet. What is the purpose of life; is it simply eating, sleeping, gossiping and dying one day or is there something more? We can discover all these things if we take a little time out for our self.

Definitely, a silent retreat once or twice a year can be very good. Then, you will see that nobody can take the smile away from you, nobody can disturb you as you become so strong from within. And many more avenues, dimensions within you open up.

The mysterious power of human sexuality

Q:  Dear Gurudev, I would like to hear you talk more about the mysterious power of human sexuality. Can you give us some ideas as to how to deal with the power of sexuality?

I don’t know about it. But remember you are all born from sex. We have a tendency of saying it is bad or a sin, or on the other side you indulge in it too much. You must walk the middle path. Moderation in everything. Life should have moderation.

Sex is an act to bring the mind to the present moment. And there is expenditure there. It is not just the body that is there, it is the movement of energy within you that gives you a sense of relief or ecstasy.

Like, smokers feel a sense of relaxation when they smoke. It is not the smoke that is elevating you, it is the way you breathe, in a particular pattern that elevates you. A particular channel - what we call nadi – opens up. It brings a little relaxation.
When you do breathing exercise (pranayama), the same thing happens. A certain nadi opens up inside of you, and you feel relaxed, without the harming affect of the smoke that you fill in your lungs. You don’t need to do that.

So with sex also, an energy channel opens. When this energy channel opens up within you, it brings a certain relaxation first, and then you to have a scintillating heightened blissful sensation. This one can get in meditation also.

So in the ancient times, they have measured Samadhi or deep meditation as 1000 units of sex -- if sex brings one unit of joy, Samadhi is 1000 units of that. If sex is one little bulb of zero watt, Samadhi is a thousand watt bulb. That is the comparison they have given. That is why when you are in Samadhi, you naturally move out of the base tendencies. You naturally get transformed.

Kushmanda Mata Meditation is Abundance and fullness meditation

Kushmanda Mata  Meditation is Abundance and fullness meditation

Spiritual significance of Kushmanda
What does Kushmanda really mean?
Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar explains:
A pumpkin is round. It refers to your prana (subtle life force energy) which is total; complete like a sphere.
It is one of the most pranic vegetables on this planet.
Energy pervades this entire universe from the smallest to the largest.
Our energy has this unique quality of being smaller than the smallest, and larger than the largest.
Kushmanda means the Mother Divine manifests as prana, as the energy within us.
Like a pumpkin, you too should feel the ABUNDANCE
and FULLNESS in your life, and see every particle in creation alive with prana. Seeing that awakened intelligence manifest and pervading everywhere in creation is the meaning of Kushmanda.

The feverishness, and attachment or delusion, and diabetes

The feverishness, and attachment or delusion, and diabetes

In Tamil there is a saying, ‘veham, moham, madhu meham’. The feverishness, and attachment or delusion, and diabetes, they are all linked. If you are in a hurry to do everything, sometimes you are bound to get diabetic. So, slow down. ‘Moham’ means attachment. Mind is raising & clinging on to things and unable to be in the present moment and grieving. That is ‘delusion’, excessive attachment. It is connected with diabetes.

The sweetness has become like a cloud. ‘Meham’ also means cloud. Cloud is of no use. It only gives little shade. But the water in the form of cloud is not useful. You cannot drink it. When you are thirsty, stand in the cloud, the cloud doesn’t do anything to you. It can’t quench your thirst. So, similarly, there is sugar in the body but the cells in the body are starving. They are not able to use it as energy. See how ancient people, even when they name anything, there is a functional aspect to it.

‘Veham, Moham, Madhu-meham’. These things are something to be avoided and I really congratulate the effort Dr. Nagendra is putting and Dr. Nagratna.  I know them from last forty years. And they have been doing one-pointed service. You know, any big thing can happen only when there is ‘tyaga’, when there is sacrifice. And how dedicatedly they are working on this, documenting and doing research. We can have all this healing experiences, beautiful experiences, but it need that scientific documentation. And that is what India was lacking all these years. And this is a very big step that S-VYASA is doing to get this documentation done and bringing everyone together, all the organizations, throughout the country, throughout the world, like the string which joins the pearls. Lord Krishna says ‘I am the string which joins all the pearls’. And that work is being done now. With our Prime Minister’s initiative, I am sure the country will move very fast and so will the world. For us the whole world is our family, we have already declared ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (‘One World Family). Diabetes in India or China or any place on Earth, need to be tackled. So everyone will work towards that.

In Karnataka, a group of young people have started a movement: ‘Be Good and Do Good’. This is a very good initiative. Inside us there is this hurry to do everything at the earliest. And there is attachment in the mind. It is said that if you have these two in your mind, then diabetes will follow automatically.

Hence, we need to slow down, walk slowly, reduce the speed a little. And there should not be any discrimination in mind. Keep your mind clean so that the feverishness of wanting something and if you keep thinking about it whole day, then it will definitely affect you. If you do these things, then you will have control over diabetes. Everyone should help and support this.

We should also take care of our food habits. Few people done research and it has shown that if we should use millet instead of rice, it will be good. And in our Vedic tradition it has been a practice that unless we put a drop of ghee (clarified butter) on rice till then it is not purified. Diabetologists say that if we put little bit of ghee on rice, then the digestion process gets slower. Due to which it does not form sugar immediately. See in ancient times, our Rishis (saints) have said such beautifully, ‘charity purifies money, ghee (clarified butter) purifies food, chanting purifies mind, service purifies action, kind words purify our speech. All these are important in life. Along with putting clarified butter on rice, it is also important to do Yoga. If you take ghee (clarified butter), then it is also necessary to do Asanas to digest it.

Life should be lived lightly, easily, with no stiffness, no walls, unassuming, free and at home with everybody

Life should be lived lightly, easily, with no stiffness, no walls, unassuming, free and at home with everybody.

Q: I have a very nice family, a lovely and caring husband and three lovely daughters, no financial problem, but on and off I have disturbed moods and emotions without reason! Is this problem inherited from my father as he is a major depression patient? And my grandfather committed suicide long long ago; my father hated my grandfather so much!
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Listen, everything changes! Every cell in your body changes in one year and when you are on the spiritual path, this is accelerated. However the past has been, you simply dump it, drop it, okay! Yeah, people didn’t know how to handle their mind in those days, but now you know, okay! The concept, ‘Because of my hereditary problem I am having this mood swing’ will not let your mind be free. It can all change and it is changing. With the practice of pranayama, you must have already noticed a change. It will continue to improve. Few more advanced courses and little more meditation will also help.

Q: I take a lot of allopathic medicines for body aches, but still I suffer pain here and there in the body.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: We don’t take care of our body, we don’t do enough exercise. We eat all this food with so many chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers and all that… all those pesticides get into the body and they cause all this pain, once you detoxify yourself, you will see how this pain will go.

Q: Dear Guruji, I like a person C and E. The problem is I do not know whom to choose. C loves me a lot where as I find it a challenge to love E. So whom should I chose?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: you know what I say in all these cases, choice is yours, blessing is mine!If I make a choice for you, then anytime you will have any fight with that person , you will say, “I did not choose you. Its only because of Guruji that I married you”. Then not only you but I will also be in trouble! So, the best thing is you choose, okay and know that you will choose only the best. Whomsoever you choose will be the best for you. The other one which you have not chosen is never going to be best for you. This much I assure you.

Q: How do I let go of the past?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: We must always see the past as destiny, future as free will and live happily in the present moment. We do the other way round, what we do? We think the past was free will and the future is all destiny, and you remain in the present inactive and miserable, this is what foolish people do. What do intelligent people do? The intelligent people see the past as it is gone, done, finished and that was meant to be, it was destiny. Something good has happened and you have learnt something, and something bad has happened and you have learnt. Both ways you have learnt, so past is destiny. We can create future now, our spirit has the capacity to see what we want. Future is free will, we are happy and one with everybody in the present. We should find every reason to be happy but what we do, we do the other way round, we find every reason to be unhappy.Yeah of course challenges come in life, pleasant things happen; unpleasant things happen so what, huh!

Q: I am feeling bliss that I have come to know of the ‘Art of Living’. I am a Buddhist; can I become an ‘Art of Living’ teacher?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Yes, sure! Definitely. You truly understand and live what Buddha has said.

Q: Dear Guruji, I am in this course (advanced course) but this time around I slept through all the meditations. May I ask what is wrong with me?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Yeah, not only you but others also notice that you are sound asleep. It’s okay. You know when your body is so tired, you must have been up late night and so much of stress might have accumulated. If you fall asleep never mind, that is why the program is for four days.First reason could be that your body could be very tired, second the food must be very tasty and you must be eating a little more than required, and if you take yogurt and a little heavy food in the afternoon, sometimes then you will fall asleep. So, you can reduce the food, just one spoon less, two spoons less. Eat a little less food; drink more juice or vegetables or fruits. Third is if you lack oxygen, if you have not done some little exercise or take a walk, brisk walk or a little jogging in the morning then also this may happen. One or two rounds of bhastrika also help.

Q: Course will be perfect without translation, when can we stop?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Okay now listen, this is your concept. Just imagine if you were on the other side and I would speak only Chinese, don’t speak any English, and there would be no translation, then what would you do? ‘Oh, please let me have translation’. Don’t keep the concept in mind, ‘oh translation is bothering me’. No it does not matter, let it be there. Listen to it like music. You know people who cannot read Chinese, we find it so beautiful when we go to Hong-Kong, because all these Chinese letters look like decoration. All the sign boards look like decoration, some rangoli or some designs. The entire Hong-Kong is decorated with design boards everywhere. It does not bother but if you know the language, you will be reading all the boards and it will be bothering you more. When you don’t know, it looks so nice.

Q: How we all can make this world the best place to stay and when?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: I am happy that you have this thought and you are in the right place. Let us all join together, we will do some nice things.

Q: What is love, and how to find peace?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: I have spoken about all this in the Narada Bhakti Sutras. Different types of love and what is love? Listen to those tapes.

Q: Dear Guruji, I desperately need one good job and visa for some country, please help me!
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Yeah, you pray, you do meditation. Whatever you ask for, you are getting it, right! How many of you are getting whatever you desire? You wish and you are getting, your work is getting done. How many of your wishes are coming true? (many raise hands)

Q: I want to go to India with my family members.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Yeah you’re welcome to come. We will organize, I think in the stadium also many people wanted to come to India the other day. If it’s a long big group then it will be fun. Some good travel agent here, any travel agent here? Then we will make arrangements and sometime all must come, it’s just very close from here, just four hours.

Q: How to improve memory and be more creative and imaginative?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: How to improve memory? I will tell you next year, let me see whether you remember the question! You do have good memory; If you think you don’t have, little more pranayama, and there are some ayurvedic things for memory, you can take Brahmi and Shankapushpi, these herbs are good for memory.

Q: How to overcome the air in my stomach and deal with constipation as it makes my emotions go bad, really bad, especially during working hour?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Food, food, food, change your food habits. Is there an Ayurvedic doctor here or Chinese doctor? They can suggest some herb, in Ayurveda, there is something called Triphala. So every night you take two-three tablets of Triphala which cleanses the body and constipation will go, hah! That is a very general medicine, harmless. Do we have Ayurveda here? Let’s work towards getting these herbs, they are very useful.

Q: When two kids like to fight with each other, what should I do?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Just join them! See that they don’t have sharp things in their hands. Children should fight, they fight and they come back again and they hug each other, they love each other, they can’t be without each other. But it is the adults, it takes them months, years and sometimes even lifetimes to shake hands. Kids are not like that, they fight a moment and next moment they are hand in hand with each other, better you don’t get involved in their matters. Children live in the moment, kids live in the moment, so they fight now and they forget now and this is the beauty.
