The smallest act of kindness can have an everlasting impact for all of humankind

*The Nobel & the Floor-Maid*

The Tewksbury Institute in Massachusetts was known for housing the poor and ill.

A young girl named Anne was sent there after her mother’s death, as her behaviour was incorrigible – which means nobody could do anything about her. She would bite and scream, and throw her food at people. Even the doctors and nurses could not examine her properly. She would spit and scratch at them as they tried to get close. For this reason, she would often be put in a cage – something like a small prison cell, kept in the basement of an old section of the building.

An elderly floor maid who worked there, observed all this and felt very sorry for the little girl. She would often think to herself, “I sure would hate to be locked up in a cage like that.” She wanted to help her, but didn't have any idea what she could do. She would wonder, “If the doctors and nurses cannot help her, what can someone like me do?"

So, one night after work, she just baked a small cake for Anne. The next day she brought it in, walked carefully to her cage and said, “Anne I baked a cake just for you. I'll put it right here on the floor and you can come and get it if you want.” Then she started backing off, out of fear that Anne might throw the cake at her. But she didn't. She actually took the cake and ate it.

After that, Anne was just a little bit nicer to this maid when she was around. They would talk sometimes, and once this lady even got her laughing. One of the nurses noticed this and she told the doctor. They asked the maid if she would help them with Anne, and she agreed. So that's how it came about that every time they wanted to see Anne or examine her, the floor maid would go into the cage first and explain and calm her down, and hold her hand. Which is how they discovered that Anne was almost blind.

After they'd been working with her for about a year - and it was tough with Anne - the Perkins institute for the Blind opened its doors. They were able to help her and she went on to study, and became a teacher herself.

Anne went back to the Tewksbury Institute to visit, and to see what she could do to help out. At first, the Director didn't say anything and then he thought about a letter he'd just received. A man had written to him about his daughter. She was absolutely unruly - almost like an animal.

He'd been told she was blind and deaf as well as 'deranged'. He was at his wit's end, but he didn't want to put her in an asylum. So he wrote to the Institute to ask if they knew of anyone - any teacher - who would come to his house and work with his daughter.

And that is how Anne Sullivan became the lifelong companion of Helen Keller.

When Helen Keller was nominated for the Nobel Prize, she was asked who had the greatest impact on her life and she said, "Anne Sullivan." But Anne said, "No Helen. The woman who had the greatest influence on both our lives was a floor maid at the Tewksbury Institute."

_History is changed when one person asks: What can someone like me do?_
And the smallest act of kindness can have an everlasting impact for all of humankind.

*"Empathy is the automatic tuning in to another's field, what he or she is feeling, what they have brought to you."*

Everything is God

 Everything is God

When Janaka discovered that all these days I was not knowing...example hologram ...one side nehru or other side you see Gandhi. Entire Universe is made of God...nothing is beyond foreign to God...divine. It needs skill to see it. Like bubble in water...waves in ocean. You need to skill it. Everything is name and Form. Name doesn't have form in it but the forms don't have name. People are like waves...they arise and disappear in water. They dissolve in space....in between names and forms..They rise and fall. Don't search for God. All that is God ,will be . All life are springing and dissolving in that. I am hollow and empty. I am all forms and all names but you are acting like someone else. Your true nature is joy or what you are perceiving is true. So,a skill is required. Tilt your eyes ..this is God...all universe. Dimension opposites are created...their co existence makes it complete. They all exist within God. Very difficult for people who define him. In one hand he is omnipresent and omnipotent and on the other hand, he exists in sattan. Immune system is destroying bacteria...it's violence. People ask questioning. Why not only one set of people..and they exist for long. When events become big...it becomes bliss. Intensity of events change and superimpose. Existence remains the same. That which is changeless is truth and which is ever-changing is illusion. You have yelled and said this is not me. Once you have experienced silence, then you know it's not me. Skilfully see and realize and rise above duality. See whole world people as bubble above water. Everybody is having their own games and dissolving. With one person, whole type of emotions come...then you say all this is nothing. All arise in mind and fall. Mind is wave in the self. So is moods. None will stay more than a two-quarter of day. Pleasant moments you can't hold but bad moments you keep on holding. So, skill is required. Skill makes it simple. You need to skill to go deep inside. He has not mentioned what skill. You can say it is all love or just projection. Love is behind every action positive or negative. You need skill to know it or experience it. Like threads maje a cloth but if you separate threads, then where is the cloth. Likewise concepts are worn into consciousness. Mind which is ironed very well. We put creases in mind...so ironed mind. That's why appears silly. When you see the life like this, problem disappears.
Nothing will happen to you as they are appearing and disappearing.. with your skillful intellect..life is colorful. I reality there is no compassion..someone is suffering..it shall give maturity to the person. If someone is not friendly, you can't let go.
He goes on giving examples..sugar is present all over sugarcane...it tastes same everywhere....water in ocean is same everywhere..so you are present all over infinity. Sometime you are sitting and child falls.. you also experience same. You imitate surrounding atmosphere too. Middle class go on criticizing...even guru ji is criticizing...how much energy is wasted...we are not skillful in our action, perception. Through some skill, doership is not felt. It's through total devotion and surrender. It shows how deep affection he has for Ashtavakra. His heart and mind were so aligned with nature. Just hankering for unity, knowledge will not help. How close you can go while doing meditation...you will be frustrated...you drop meditation as nothing happens. We are in satsang...so much into knowledge...but so what...struggle goes on...that's why skillfully...you are special...don't compare yourself...one of our devotee got angry, person was hankering, feeling bad..so I gave them surprise by visiting him. That person broke down...I thought but faith became alright..if faith is high, body gets healed.
All is taranga ...na bubudaa. Then only you can smile. Life is so short.

Freedom, suffering and bondage - Astavakra Gita Chapter 2

๐Ÿ Chapter 2: THE FIVE PRINCIPLES (Part 1 - Freedom, suffering and bondage)

  King Janaka wanted freedom immediately.
๐ŸŒธ What restricted him? Why did he want freedom? He was living like us but not many of us want freedom!
๐ŸŒธ One who is asleep doesn't feel bondage. Janaka has started feeling the bondage. *DO WE FEEL BONDAGE!!! ARE WE ASLEEP OR AWAKE!!*

 What is this freedom?
๐ŸŒธ *Freedom from fixed pattern in life* . One can go into these patterns infinite times without even being aware of them. E.g.: getting angry or being fearful and then later realizing situation could have been handled in a better way, committing same mistake again but may be with different people. Here our pattern is same, only people/events are changing but we behave in the same manner.(say today I got angry on my brother and later in a day I got angry on my boss but then realized may be I could have handled it properly, here people have changed but my pattern of getting angry is same).

๐ŸŒธ Now that we know this pattern and we often get bored from these patterns but we don’t know how to get out of them. *THIS IS BONDAGE* . (e.g.: I will say I am so frustrated because I get so much angry and it has become my nature only and now this thing has become bondage for me as I know the cause but don't know how to come out of it.)

๐ŸŒธ *SUFFERING* : it is rotating in these patterns, getting caught up in a pattern and unable to come out of it.
๐ŸŒธ What imposes a pattern on us? These are our *habits* . E.g.: habit of drinking tea/coffee in the morning, that doesn't gives us any joy but lack of it gives headache. *Again this is a bondage.*

๐ŸŒท *Activity* : Let us find out what are our sufferings? And then figure out patterns that are causing those sufferings and the habits behind those patterns. Hint to identify pattern: Checkout the things/incidents from past few months/years that are repeating in our life.(e.g. : Suffering could be - people don’t listen to me, pattern - getting angry over this again and again, habit - I want things to work as per me OR Suffering - poor physical health , pattern - I am not adhering to proper routine, habit- again and again eating unhealthy food and not exercising)
๐ŸŒท *PURPOSE OF THIS ACTIVITY* : So that we become aware of our habits/patterns. First step is to become aware, only if we know something then we can come out of it. As most of the people are grumbling about their sufferings but they are unaware of the underlying patterns/habits.

๐ŸŒธ *So, what I understood is sufferings are caused by certain patterns and patterns are formed by certain habits.*
๐ŸŒธ We often hear people saying I want mukti but have they ever pondered mukti from what? What is mukti? Mukti from this world? What is binding us then in this world? And this again comes back to our patterns/habits (which are the cause of our cravings and aversions i.e. our bondages)
....Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji

Good Fat Bad Fat

Good Fat Bad Fat

I will like thank everybody for overwhelming response to my last post “Speechless Teens” about increasing suicidal tendency in teenagers. I have decided to move ahead with the same topic. Today will discuss a different aspect of the same topic. In last post we discussed about the virtual reality of internet & social media as a culprit for suicidal tendency in teenagers. It is said that “we are what we eat”. There has been a drastic change in our food habits especially in last 50 years. I will like to draw your attention towards the cause effect & analysis of this change on our behavioral pattern. Before that I will like to introduce you to our very own brain.

The Supercomputer

The average weight of an adult brain is 1400 gm. Brain has around 100 billion brain cells i.e. Neurons. If we start to count these neurons at the rate of one neuron per second it will take 3171 years to count all neurons in a single brain. To add to complexity each neuron is attached to roughly 10,000 neurons. Now one can understand why it is known as super computer. Brain accounts for just 2.5 % of our body weight but 15 -20 % fresh blood that comes out from heart is supplied to it. That’s shows its importance. Brain is made up of 77 % water, 12 % fat, 8 % protein and 1 % carbohydrate. So we can conclude that ‘fat’ is an integral part of the brain architecture.

Z + security

Brain is one of the most important organs in the body. There is a threat that a toxic substance can enter in brain through blood circulation and might result in severe damage to the brain. So it has given special security. The thinnest blood vessels i.e. capillary in the brain allow only selected molecules to enter inside brain. So it acts like a wall between blood and the brain. It is known as “Blood Brain Barrier”. This barrier is made up of lipid like substance. You get the following reference in “Essentials of Medical Pharmacology” written by DR K.D. Tripathi which is a renowned book in medical fraternity. ‘Only lipid soluble drugs, therefore are able to penetrate and have action on central nervous system’ that means fat plays a crucial role in facilitating entry of any molecule in to brain.

Ghee? NO Please

Before 50 years ago it was impossible to find house in India that doesn’t have ghee. As we become westernized the picture started to change. Our minds were programmed in such a way that we started thinking Ghee means cholesterol; cholesterol means Heart attack and heart attack means death. So ghee is nothing but gateway to death. Unfortunately ghee was banned from Indian kitchens. Today if you will ask somebody “Do you eat ghee?”; instantaneous reaction is “NO not at all. We are very diet conscious; Who will eat such ‘High cal’ stuff ? It’s strange that these people enjoy eating bakery products prepared in hydrogenated vegetable oils, margarine, extra cheese pizza, frozen desserts outside. All these food items contain high percentage of ‘Trans fats’. Studies have shown that Trans fats have serious consequences on your brain. There is a relationship between Trans fat consumption and mental illness like depression, Alzhimer’s disease. But they are not bothered about its effect on health. People are OK with it. On this note let’s learn few facts about Ghee.

DHA rich food

DHA is one a types of Omega 3 fatty acid essential for development and nutrition of brain and eyes. Ghee is prepared by two methods traditional method in Indian households and direct cream method at commercial level. As per latest research; if we prepare ghee as per traditional method prescribed in Ayurved; then it has significantly high percentage of DHA. At the same time DHA percentage is pretty less in commercially prepared Ghee.
This means Ghee prepared by Ayurvedic method easily crosses the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) & nourishes your brain. Surprisingly great Aacharya of Ayurved like Charaka, Sushruta have described the beneficial effects of Ghee on memory and intelligence 2500 years back. But the irony is we Indians don’t have faith in them because they didn't have a laboratory report to show.

Most of the teenagers today just hate Ghee; they have hardly tasted it. So their brain is deprived of nutrition hence they didn’t get stability and peace of mind. So we can say that when Indians were eating ghee regularly the suicides were under control. Once we banned it from our kitchens the suicide rate started to increase. Boycotting the ghee is one of the most important causes for increasing suicides in teenagers. In nut shell you have to eat two teaspoons of Ghee daily to keep your brain healthy.

Scientific Ayurved

Ayurveda advocates use of medicated ghee i.e. Siddha Ghruta prosessed with herbs like Brahmi, Vacha and Shankhpushpi for neurological & psychological disorders. Kalyanka Ghruta, Sarswat Ghruta, Panchgavya Ghruta are few examples amongst them. Now the question is How did they decided to use ghee for these diseases? Did they knew concept of Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) ?

The answer is NO. The answer lies in experimental wisdom of Ayurved. The Aacharyas must have used different formulations like powder, decoction i.e. Kadha, juice, medicated ghee of these drugs over a period of time on a number of patients. Then they have come to the conclusion that the medicated ghee was the most effective amongst them. That means it is not a serendipity but AYURVEDA IS A SCIENCE BASED ON EXPERIMENTAL WISDOM OF OUR ANCESTORS. So it a time that we start recognizing its strength. Let us proudly share this science of life on international platform.

Act wise - Eat Rice Devastating Diabetes

Act wise  -  Eat Rice
Devastating Diabetes

The deadly diabetes is increasing in India day by day. India currently represents 49% of the world’s diabetes burden, with an estimated 72 million cases in 2017 a figure expected to almost double to 134 million by 2025. Industrialization and globalization accelerated India’s growth from 1990 till today. As per data from World Bank; India’s per capita income has gone up by 340% since 1990 to 2016. Over the same time period diabetes patients have increased 123 %. So developing India is also Diabetic India. There are a number of reasons for this situation increased intake of processed food, heavy consumption of carbohydrates, sedentary lifestyle, mental stress, genetic traits of Indians are a few of them.

Rice is often blamed for increase in blood sugar levels due to its high Glycemic index (GI) & Glycemic load (GL). As a doctor I can clearly see increasing apprehension of peoples towards rice. Rice was first cultivated in India; it has been a staple food in most part of Asia for more than 2500 years. Still the number of diabetics in India was relatively low up to 25 years back. Then what is the reason that suddenly rice has become a villain ?  Let’s try & find the truth with the help of Ayurved.

As stated earlier rice is a probable cause of diabetes due to its high GI & GL. As per Ayurved repeated intake of certain varieties of rice or few preparations of rice like Kheer & Kihchadi can lead to Prameh. (a disease having close resemblance with Diabetes) Ayueved says that anything that increases Kapha in body can cause Diabetes. So according to modern science rice causes diabetes due to its high GI while as per Ayurved rice increases Kapha in body so it can cause diabetes. If we can reduce the Kapha producing tendency of rice; we can avoid diabetes. For this we will have to follow ‘Ten principles’ of Ayurved while cooking rice.

Rice – Selection criteria

As per Charak Samhita varieties of rice having long grain and scent can cause Diabetes. So varieties like Basmati & Aambemohor are out of the question. Traditionally scented rice was eaten be once in a while during festive season. International Rice Research Institute & University of Queensland studied GI of 233 varieties of rice found worldwide. Dr M.A. Fitzgerald who was principal investigator of that research stated that “GI of the Swarna & Masoori varieties of rice that commonly consumed in India is around 55 while GI of Basmati is 68.” According to Ayurved local variety of food (cultivated in the region you are residing) help you keep healthy.

The crop that matures in short time period is easily digestible thus produces less Kapha. We used to get such varieties in Konkan region of Maharashtra. We hardly see it now days. It is a one of the side effects of globalization. Processes involved in removing husk of rice give known as polishing. It gives white colour to rice but takes away essential nutrients from it & causes Beriberi. Excessive polishing of rice also makes it heavy to digest. Earlier we Indians used to do parboiling of rice that saved us from Vitamin deficiencies. So the demand for less processed Brown Rice is increasing once again.

Earlier people used to store rice in their houses and then consume it after a year or so. Storage reduces water content in rice so it generates less quantity of Kapha. It is routine observation that rice prepared from fresh crop is sticky while old rice grains cook out beautifully where each grain is non-sticky and separate. We have given up our traditional storage of Rice. Such aged rice has been sold by few companies at high price. Here as well Ayurved gives you practical solution. If you heat rice for few minutes on a low flame; it will reduce the water content. So rice becomes easy to digest and produces less Kapha as well.

In a nut shell rice which is unscented, locally cultivated, fast maturing, stored for a year or heated on a low flame should be safe for Diabetics.

Operation Rice

Once we have selected the ideal variety now it’s time to launch ‘Operation Rice’. ‘Ashtang Hridaya’ written by Vagbhata decribes qualities of a good rice.

The rice which is เคธुเคงौเคค means properly washed เคช्เคฐเคธ्เคฐुเคค means from which water is drained, เคธ्เคตिเคจ्เคจ means completely cooked & which is served warm is easy to digest. The rice processed with digestive medicines is also digested easily.

เคธुเคงौเคค – It is essential to wash rice twice before cooking. Arsenic is a toxic substance which is found in traces in rice. Proper washing helps in removal of Arsenic from rice. It is essential to soak rice for 15 – 20 minutes before cooking as it reduces the cooking time considerably.

เคช्เคฐเคธ्เคฐुเคค, เคธ्เคตिเคจ्เคจ  – The method of rice preparation is mentioned in details in ‘Bhavprksah Samhita.’  Uniform heat is essential for proper cooking of food. Earthen pot is best option to fulfill this purpose. Nowadays we get attractive and durable earthen pots in market which should be considered ideal. Brass utensil with thick base is also another good option.

First take five times water than rice.  Wait till the water starts boiling. Add prewashed & soaked rice to it. Wait for few minutes. While we cook rice starch in rice undergoes a process called Gelatinization. Gelatinization increases GI of rice. Longer the time taken for cooking higher the gelatinization. In the method told in Ayurved first we boil the water then we add rice to it. So time required for cooking is limited so less gelatinization thus less GI. Once we are sure that rice is cooked properly then discontinue heat & drain the excess water (Kanji) and put a lid. This will help the grains to separate. We get rid of the excess starch by draining the excess water. So now we have less sticky rice with less GI. The drained water i.e. Kanji can be given to small children. We have given up this classical way of cooking after introduction of pressure cookers which resulted in increase in number of diabetics. It is impossible to remove Kanji when you cook in pressure cooker so rice becomes stickier.

If we cook rice with some spices that help in digestion it becomes easy to digest. So Ayurved advices to use spices like Black pepper, Cinnamon & Turmeric while cooking rice. Black pepper can be used for people who feel bloated after having rice; those who have respiratory issues can add cinnamon and diabetics or pre diabetics can add turmeric. In southern India rice is eaten in  both the meals so they put black pepper even in Idli. Rice should be consumed when it is warm.

If you will follow these simple measures while cooking rice you should not worry about diabetes.
So there is no harm in getting second opinion of Ayurved before putting a ban on rice; because Ayureved says Act wise & Eat rice.

Corn quer the world

Corn quer the world

This story started in America not long ago; but just ten years back. Two youngsters Ian Cheney and Curtis Ellis decide to do take charge of their life after finishing formal education. But at the same time they came across news saying “Their generation will be first in the American history which will have shorter life span than their ancestors and the reason behind this was the food they were eating”. They go to a scientist to confirm the authenticity of that news. The scientist examines their hairs in high tech machinery and tells them that the carbon atom in their hairs is derived from corn. They get surprised by the presence of corn in hair and decide to find out how corn has entered in their systems. They decide to cultivate corn in an acre of land in Iowa which is considered as corn capital of America. The documentary film based on their research is “King corn”. This 80 minutes documentary makes you laugh, asks some disturbing questions and at the end makes you feel depressed. It created a sensation in America. The Washington Post said that the documentary ought to be a “required viewing by anyone planning to visit a supermarket, fast-food joint, or their own refrigerator.” It is better to watch the original movie than I narrate the story.

Somebody will say it happened in America why Indians should bother about it ? Let’s go through some statistics. India is 10th in the list of highest corn growing country. In India maize is the third most important crop after rice and wheat. As per experts soon it will take the second place. That means maize has left behind Jowar (Sorghum) and Bajra (Pearl millet) in the competition. Maize production in India is growing at a highest speed than any other crop. You might feel we people hardly eat corn then why the hell it is produced so much ? 49 % of the maize produced in India used to prepare poultry feed, 12 % for production of cattle feed, 13 % used for production of starch for garment industries rest 25 % used for human consumption. Out of this 25 % mostly used for production of processed food.

Those who think we eat corn once in a while; should take a look at this list. You will find these food items in menu card of any restaurant in any city of India. Baby corn, Sweet corn soup, Corn Patties, Corn Flakes, Masala corn, Makke ki roti, Corn Pulav, Corn Cheese balls, Corn Chat, Corn Sandwitch, Corn Kabab, Corn Cheese toast, Corn Schezwan fried rice,Sweet corn Kheer, Popcorn. Our youngsters are regularly eating these beverages. This is about direct intake of corn.

Now take a look at indirect consumption of corn. Slice bread, Biscuits, Cookies, Cakes, Tomato Ketchup, Ready to eat soups, Jams, Jelly, Nutrition bar, Ice cream, Flavored Yogurt, Salad dressing, Pizza base, Peanut butter all these food items contain corn either in the form of Corn starch or High fructose corn sugar (HFCS).

HFCS – sweet poison

Aerated cold drinks, Soda, Energy drinks, so called natural canned fruit juices mainly contain HFCS as a sweetener instead of table sugar. There has been a substantial decrease in consumption of table sugar by Americans in last 30 years. Still there is a steady increase in patients of Diabetes, Obesity and Liver disease. Most of the scientists blame HFCS for these health issues. The fact is HFCS is more dangerous than sugar. But still it is freely used in food industry as it is cheaper than sugar. People who eat high fructose feel less full so they eat more which results in Obesity. If the high fructose consumed is not utilized in the body it tends to deposit in the form of fat in the liver. Some scientists believe that HFCS is a cause for Cancer of pancreas. So now US FDA has asked people to limit the intake of beverages having HFCS.

Corn Flakes – Healthy breakfast

Breakfast is not essentially Indian concept. Ayurved is doesn’t advocate breakfast in daily routine except winters. American started to realize the ill effects of corn in the early 90s. So they focused on its export. It was the same time when corn flakes entered in Indian market. Corn that was used for rapid weight gain in cattle and pigs was marketed as healthy breakfast promoting weight loss in India. It is hard to understand corn that induces weight gain in pig helps human to lose weight. But you can sell anything in India easily especially if is it is promoted by America. Corn flakes have a substantial amount of sugar in the form HFCS. Whatever carbohydrate you eat it is converted to glucose at the end. Glycemic index (GI) is a ranking system for carbohydrates based on their immediate effect on blood glucose levels. People are cursing rice due to high GI assuming it a cause for diabetes. Truth is 60 is the GI of rice and GI of corn flakes is 81. Is it a really healthy breakfast ? One bowl of corn flakes contains more salt than a packet of potato chips. Corn flakes are eaten with milk. Ayurved says that one should not mix salty food with milk as it is an incompatible diet.

Grow fast but don’t last

We have already seen than 49 % of the corn produced in India is used for Poultry feed and 12 % for cattle feed. Consumption of high amount of starch in corn leads to rapid weight gain in these animals which makes them obese and inactive. These cattle are then given high doses of antibiotics so that they should not fall sick. As much as 70 % of antibiotic sold in America is used for these animals. Then too they can hardly survive up to six months so they are slaughtered at young age. Cattle eating grass has 1.5 % of saturated fat in blood while corn fed cattle has 9 % saturated fat in the blood. So this meat is not healthy at all.

Svadeshi Movement

Let us discuss about nutritional value of corn. 100 gm corn gives 342 Kcal energy. It has 10 mg of calcium and 2.3 mg of iron. While 100 gm of Jowar (Sorghum) gives 349 Kcal energy; it has 25mg calcium and 4.1 gm of iron. At the same time Bajra (Pearl millet) gives 361 K cal energy and it has 42 mg calcium and 8 mg of iron. Ragi (Finger Millet) has 344 mg calcium per 100 gm. That means desi grains are far ahead of corn if you compare nutritive value. This information is collected from official website of “National Institute of Nutrition’ Hydrabad” so it is authentic. That means government is well aware about nutritive value of these desi grains. Then why are we still running after corn ?

In 1970 America dreamed to cor(n)quer world with corn. What is the result ? There is no point in following anybody blindly. Ayurved says that “Whole world is a teacher for an intelligent person.” But it is up to us to decide which lesson we want to learn. I think rather than thinking about cor(n)quer the world; its better we start thinking about our health first. No doubt there is a lot to learn from America like their inquisitive nature; consistent hard work in order to find solution of the problem. If we don’t change our focus one day even Indians will corn in their hairs.

Do not follow me. In fact, you cannot follow me, because I am behind you to push you forward!

Do not follow me. In fact, you cannot follow me, because I am behind you to push you forward!

April 22, 1998,
Zen Monastery Blois,
France.
Do Not Follow Me
Do not follow me. In fact, you cannot follow me, because I am behind you to push you forward! You have to leave everything behind & move ahead. All your past experiences, your relations- everything- is part of the past.

Leave the whole world of your memories behind- including me. Drop everything. I am there behind you. Move on. Stop looking for more & be free! Then compassion will flow from you.

Q- When people do not follow anyone, isn't it usually out of fear or rebelliousness?

Sri Sri: One type of Do not follow comes from fear or rebelliousness. Another type comes from heightened awareness. You cannot follow me because I am behind you & I am in you. For long you have been a sheep. Now it's time to be a lion.

"Faith in the Guru, practice, and patience are three very important ingredients for our life

"Faith in the Guru, practice, and patience are three very important ingredients for our life

It was the last day of learning for the disciples in the ashram. A final exam was to be taken that day. If successful in this, they would go back to their home. If they failed, they would have to stay back and get further education in the ashram. Acharya ji (the head master) gave bamboo baskets to all the disciples. He then asked them to fill the baskets with water from the nearby river, and bring to the ashram to water the plants.

Some disciples thought that what kind of test is Master taking, water cannot stay in the bamboo basket! Nevertheless, following the orders of Acharya ji, all the pupils took their baskets and went to the river and started filling water. As soon as the basket was pulled out of the river, all the water would flow out from the holes of the basket.

Some of the disciples gave up in a couple of attempts, saying it was impossible, and came back to the ashram. Some kept trying for a while. Some tried bringing the basket to the ashram, but the water would drain out on the way, and they would throw the baskets there itself.

There were three disciples who trusted the Master’s words. All three kept filling the bamboo basket again and again. After about an hour, they saw that the water from the bamboo basket was not dripping down anymore. Because in all this time, the basket had completely drenched in water and the bamboo had swollen and stuck to each other due to which the holes were closed. The three disciples thus, came to the ashram with bamboo baskets filled with water and watered the plants.

Acharyaji declared the result of the examination in which only these three disciples were successful. The rest of the disciples had to stay back in the ashram for further education.

Acharyaji then addressed everyone, "Faith in the Guru, practice, and patience are three very important ingredients for our life. That's why I gave this test to you all. You see, these three had faith in my statement. They continued to fill water in the basket without getting tired - they did not leave the practice. And they waited patiently till the end. They have succeeded today due to their faith, practice and patience."

All the disciples had understood the reason for their failure.

Yoga, meditation and breathing techniques are excellent resources that help work towards freeing the mind - creating a trauma-free memory and a sorrow-free soul

Meditation changes the structure of the brain. According to an article in the American Medical Journal, if you meditate for two weeks, the structure of the brain changes, and the grey cells increase. Many such research studies are available that prove that meditation integrates the left and right side of the brain to make a holistic personality. Meditation has many benefits; it helps enhance the level of vibrancy and energy, which creates an environment that is more congenial, and harmonious; a stress-free, confusion-free mind; and an inhibition-free intellect.

When a person experiences a traumatic situation in their life, that impression gets stuck in their mind for a long time, and does not allow them to look at life from a new perspective. Yoga, meditation and breathing techniques are excellent resources that help work towards freeing the mind - creating a trauma-free memory and a sorrow-free soul.
