Janaka was a king; an emperor. He had to govern, and was concerned with the welfare of the entire country, all the people, animals and crops. The complete responsibility of this was on his shoulders. Someone who does not have any responsibility, who does not even care to do anything, can just do whatever he wants to. If he wants, he can earn; if he doesn't want, he can be idle. But, the head of an institution or a country has to plan and look into everything. In a country, economics comes first. Law and order, of course, follow economics. He had to be concerned about every little thing in the country, about economics. Business is the main part of any country. Prosperity is the main goal of any country. He could not say that he had nothing to do with the prosperity of his people; so why should he earn money? He had to be concerned with their prosperity. अविनाशिनमात्मानमेकं विज्ञाय तत्त्वतः । Ashtavakra smiled mischievously, and said that knowing the truth, that the entire universe is one Self, one Being, one atma, and it is indestructible, how can one be interested in accumulating wealth? How can one find joy in making country prosperous? It was a question with a smile. When you say 'my country', there are other countries, too. You have to exploit another country in order to make your country prosperous. Some exploitation is going to take place in the economic development of a big country. Some countries sell arms to other counties, and prosper with the money that comes from it. Some countries sell drugs to other counties and prosper. Some counties export chemicals, medicines and other things, knowing very well they are not too safe. And that is the way they prosper. Some countries destroy nature, cutting down forests for wood. Environmental pollution is a big cry in the West these day but they can't stop, because it will have a bad impact on heir economics. They are unable to stop alcoholism in India, because they will lose lot of revenue if they ban liquor. Mahatma Gandhi's followers talked much about him but never followed the one thing that Gandhi wanted - to eradicate alcoholism. They take Gandhi's name, put garlands on his statue but they could never implement this because, when they discussed and analyzed, they felt the economics would be jeopardized if they implemented it.

'Having understood all this, how can you be interested in managing a country, in earning money, and doing these things?' Ashtavakra asked Janaka with a smile. By now, Ashtavakra knew very well that Janaka had no interest or motivation in this. He did not have any pleasure doing it. But it was happening. He was doing it as a game. There are some things you do from your periphery, but some things become your very 'soul'. When business becomes your very 'soul', the 'soul' is destroyed and you 'die'. That is what Janaka upheld. He was carrying out the two extremes: total love, pure love and knowledge, while still being responsible for the entire country's welfare on the periphery. It is a very strange and unique situation. That is what makes Janaka very unique. It is easy to be a Buddha. Buddha dropped everything, put on a saffron robe and sat under a tree. Anybody would come and feed him. Hundreds of thousands of people would come to do so. He did not start an ashram. An ashram came up around him. Everything started happening. Even then, he could not escape. There were people and when there were people, a kitchen was needed. Other things followed. A laundry came because the clothes needed to be washed. The whole paraphernalia came up. Then a vehicle was needed and somebody had to do the transport. But the so-called saints, the so-called spiritual people who run away from all this are bewildered. They are afraid of the world. They do not want a headache. They want to be by themselves. They want to go to the Himalaya for sanyas, to go to a monastery or stay somewhere quietly, all by themselves. Janaka, being in the world amidst people, and having much more responsibility than any individual, ordinary, common man, could attain the highest. So the world is not an impediment. It is not an impediment, at all. Politics is not an impediment. It is all really very difficult to achieve, but not impossible.

Janaka asked how the businessman get drowned in these tidal waves. The individual Self, the soul, is trying to do business all the time. What is business? Giving less and getting more. You buy something for two rupees and sell it for three or four rupees. That is business. Otherwise, how can a business thrive? If you buy for more - buy for four rupees and sell for two rupees - that is no business! Business means giving less and taking more.

Love is the opposite. Love is giving everything and taking nothing. The limited mind always does business anywhere - even with one's own life; even with the breath. We don't even breathe properly. A soul is trying to do business. The limited mind is trying to do business in the name of love. In every relationship you will find that people should receive much more than what they have given! One feels that he has given enough!

In any relationship, everybody feels that they had done everything for their relatives, their family and so they must love them. Everything that we do so in order to get love, attention, recognition or something. This is business. Doing something in order to get something is business - even a blessing or grace. You feel that you must get some grace; that you must get a private audience with Guruji because you are doing so much work. You get down to business. You must enjoy these privileges because you are a dedicated worker. You have become a businessman. In the name of devotion, the individual soul is doing business. It either wants material gain, or it wants some unseen, spiritual, experiential gain. But it all boils down to business, whether joy, bliss, ananda or anything else. In these tidal waves, the poor businessman is drowned.

Janaka exclaimed that it was a wonder. He was wonderstruck with the entire phenomenon. Only in love can you become one. Only when you are ready to lose yourself in your infinite nature, are you totally united with Brhama, the Infinity, the Divine. The whole mechanics need to be reversed - the limited individual becoming the Infinite assuming back its true nature. Janaka said that it was amazing how all the little minds, desires, feelings and situations arose in him and played in him and dissolved by their very nature.

स्वभावतः Now it was Ashtavakra's turn. He smiles at Janaka - the smile of a gardener who sees the garden is now full of flowers. All that he had worked for was fulfilling. The bud had blossomed, and the joy of he gardener was immense, inexpressible. Ashtavakra said that, indeed, as a king, Janaka has recognized this.

मय्यनन्तमहाम्भोधावाश्चर्यं जीववीचयः ।
उद्यन्ति ध्नन्ति खेलन्ति प्रविशन्ति स्वभावतः ॥

It's so beautiful. Eight to ten thousand years ago, Janaka shared the same experience and said it so beautifully. 'I am so taken by surprise. It's awesome. It's so wonderful! In my Self so many different lives are springing up, playing and dissolving in me. By its very nature, it's me who is coming in this person - as this person, as that person, as all these people and personalities with lifestyles, acting in various dramas and soap operas. They rise and clash with each other.'

Just sit and watch wrestling matches on the television. Can you feel as if both of them are your own Self? If you have ever acted in a drama or the theater, you can play two different roles; a monologue where you act both as the hero and the villain. You act in many roles; completely opposite person pushing all his buttons. Then you act the other person and push all his buttons. Let us see what happens. Will the sun fall on your head? Like waves, the personalities clash with each other.

It's in you; in your own nature; in your own form. Different waves arise; different beings arise and different souls arise. They rise and clash with each other. They play and dissolve and go back into you. This life and world is full of opposites. The sun is hot. The snow is cold. Fire evaporates water. Water puts out the fire. They are completely opposite in nature. Water flows down. Water always flows toward the mud, and mud stops the water. They have opposite natures. That is their nature. It is ridiculous to say water should not flow down because it is its nature to flow down. You cannot say fire should not go up or rise up. It's impossible, as it is its nature to rise. So, too, with every name and form that has come in this ocean; this consciousness. When you don't perceive people as lives, but as floating shells in the ocean of life, then there is no personality. In a big ocean, there are so many things; so many shells floating around, hollow and empty coconut shells, and that is what this universe is; what the world is.

What a wonder! Janaka was wonder-stuck. He did not ask a question. He was nor asking questions anymore. After the first question. This questioning stopped! His ears and heart were open. He experienced whatever Ashtavakra said without words. The substance is really in-between these verses; these words. This is all a play. उद्यन्ति ध्नन्ति खेलन्ति प्रविशन्ति स्वभावतः । By its very nature, the individual mind has arisen. But it settles down after playing for a while; settles deep down inside. So when a storm arises, just be with it. Do not try to get rid of the storm. Be with it; go into it. And, of course, you have the practices (Kriya, meditation, singing and pranayama) to help purify your whole system. It's such a blessing.

You would have noticed that when you are restless, and you start singing, there is a settling effect. Something settles down. Something really pulls you down, cools you down and brings you back to your true nature, your real Self. Your craving for perfection creates imperfection inside you. What happens when you want perfection? You become imperfect. You are craving for perfection, but you have become imperfect. You want peace, but you have become restless craving for peace. You want everybody to be peaceful; a situation to be peaceful, but you have created a big turmoil inside you. How is peace possible? It comes from within, not from without. If you are peaceful, your surroundings become peaceful; your situation becomes peaceful and people around you become peaceful. You are the center of this universe. Why are you looking for peace anywhere else, with anybody else and with any other set up? Wherever you go, you carry your own mind. And wherever you go, you create the same storms. It may appear to be calm and quiet for some time in some place but then it will be the same again there too. Unless you see this, realize it and look into it, nothing will help in the long term. There is no other permanent solution. Janaka did not feel that the storm should not rise in his mind. He just wondered how the storm rose and subside. He wondered what an amazing play of the personality it was inside his big, huge and unbounded nature! He was awestruck and became silent.

मय्यनन्तमहाम्भोधौ चित्तवाते प्रशाम्यति ।
अभाग्याज्जीववणिजो जगत् पोतो विनश्वरः ॥

"My individual Self, or personality, simply dissolves into my big nature which is my true nature." Every storm that comes into your life widens your horizons, makes you deeper and more powerful. Every storm destroys some smallness in you; something that was very small. Jiva. You think you are an individual self with likes and dislikes. But a storm comes in your life whether you like it or not. It lashes you and pulls you out of your likes and dislikes. This has happened, and is happening.

Every storm is a blessing. It cuts you, destroys you and finishes you off. You cry. If you are knowledgeable, you won't cry. You will laugh. Events are the same. You laugh at them because you know your infinite nature. You are not a limited personality. You are not a worm. You are the universe. So a small merchant in a small boat with peanuts to sell across the ocean is simply destroyed in the storm. Janaka made fun of his own personality - the poor fellow! The poor personality in him which was destroyed by all the storms. Nothing else happened.

This is the role of knowledge. In knowledge, you smile and laugh at an event. You grow out of an event with the power of knowledge just as a drowning person holds onto even a straw. Knowledge is like holding on to a life jacket in the storm. A life jacket may be a small kit, but it saves you from drowning. Everybody in the world faces these crises, for instance personality clashes, relationship problems, worries about the future, insecurity about life. The days pass by and whether they are in the right place or not? Will they get the right people around them? All sorts of confusion, jealousy, anger and hatred arise! But the persons with the life jackets are saved. They arise above all this. Put on the life jacket, blow it up and be well prepared. The poor merchant, the poor individual soul gets completely destroyed. It's the individual who gets destroyed, Infinity is indestructible. Being immortal is looking at your infinite nature. All prophets have already said, 'Die before death. Die while you are still alive.'

There cannot be an ocean without waves. Every event touches life somewhere on its surface. It creates movement. Take all that comes with both your hands. Don't say that it is impossible or not possible for you. This thought of something being not possible means that you are resisting. This is making the storms stay for long periods. Stand there with your arms open. Say, 'Whatever storms come, let them, I'm here.' You grow out of them. You become bigger. That is crucifixion. Crucifixion is not just Jesus hanging on the cross. Jesus said, 'What can crucify or destroy me? Come what may, there is nothing that can destroy me. It may be excruciatingly painful, but it doesn't matter. It still cannot destroy or kill me. I am here. I am much, much bigger than all these emotions, commotions or waves. They all rise inside me, in me, and in no way can they destroy me. Let them be.'

See the broader perspective of one's Self, otherwise we keep running away from small things. Pleasant sensations arise, unpleasant sensations arise. Good feelings arise, not so good feelings arise. Just this is enough for you to become more feverish and to start blaming your Self. You feel that it should not have happened to you - मय्यनन्तमहाम्भोधौ, 'In the ocean of my Self, many such lives are rising and dissolving. All those whom I see are part of me. All the lives I see are just my own form. I have taken so many forms. My own consciousness, my own mind is acting this way in that mind and that way in this mind. All these different minds are playing different roles, but they all are me. A wave arises and another wave comes back, recedes.'

मय्यनन्तमहाम्भोधौ चित्तवाते समुद्यते । The storms arose in him but they never stayed in him forever. They subside in him too. He said that he had got the clue! He had thought that he was peaceful only when the storms were gone. If the ocean thinks that it is nice and blue only when there is no storm, then it's mistaken. Even when there were storms, he was still deep. He was still the ocean.

                🌿Chapter - 10🌿
           ~ Storms Of Emotion ~

                   🌱 Day - 53 🌱

💐☘🌾☘🍀🍁🍀☘🌾☘💐

Life is found to be caught up in storms so very often. And you are not yourself when you are in a storm. You don't know what to do. At those moments all your practices, concepts, ideas and ideals fall apart. Your devotion, your love and all the beautiful things you cherish in your life, simply don't seem to be there or mean anything. You are under the influence of a big storm. A whirlwind rises in you and throws you off balance. Even when the storm has subsided, the very memory of it disturbs you even more. What do you do? Nothing is helpful. You sit, close your eyes and try to meditate. But the mind is all over the place. You feel as though you are in a burning furnace, and you don't know how to put the fire out. It's like a burning Kuwaiti oil well in you. And the more effort you make to cool it down, and put it out, the more the fire burns, the more the restlessness and agitation increase.

You are only yourself between the storms. How many storms rise in your life, and how frequently do they rise? The less frequent they are, the more you are yourself. At those moments you are happy; you are settled. You are calm. Just think of those moments of intense restlessness, agitation and feverishness. The breath becomes heavier. The body becomes unbearable. You are not at all aware of the mind. But that is not what you are. You get a glimpse of the clearness of yourself between two storms. But life seems to be like the ocean - wave after wave lashing you one after another. What do you do? You do Kriya. Breathe in and breathe out. There may be some relief but still... So you read and you listen to knowledge talks. Even that is not entering the head, because the mind is in the whirlpool of the storm. Nothing enters it.

This is the only problem. This is the only basic problem in the universe. There is no other problem. You can attach it to one thousand causes or reasons, but the problem is how to free your life from this storm which has gripped it. The first thing to do is to become aware of this. At that moment, the storm will subside. First, stop regretting things. It is nature. Waves come and, for no reason, there is turmoil in the mind. When your mind cools down and you experience that inner cool, soft and delicate aspect of yourself, there is a big relief. You would have experienced this is life. In the storm, all the feverishness of 'what should I do, what do I want', all the desires, anxieties, fears and ideas loosen their grip on you. No one storm can be there all the time. It is impossible. It comes and subsides. Then another comes and subsides. Another comes and subsides. Your mind is like a wind - a whirlwind, subsiding and cooling down. That is your nature. That is love.

Janaka suddenly said, 'Aho! That's so surprising to me! I have been resisting restlessness all this time. Now I see it is there. Okay, so let it be there. It is a part of nature.' The storm is also part of nature. Stop resisting storm. Take it, full it in its totality; go deep into it and see it is nothing. It is just created out if yourself, your mind and your consciousness. In that aspect of you, you are your Self.

And that is why the sadhana and meditation has to be done. That is the purpose of ashram. An ashram is a place where you come and get a deep rest; where all efforts and strains of the mind, heart and body drop. You get a deep rest. All fears and insecurities drop. You know there is a power, some power; someone who is really caring for you. Not just someone there is only One in the whole universe. They One in the universe is caring and taking care of you. You can relax, rest and be peaceful. A place where the storm can cool down and the fire can be put out.

अहो जनसमूहेऽपि न द्वैतं पश्यतो मम ।
अरण्यमिव संवृत्तं क्व रतिं करवाण्यहम् ॥

People want to run away into the forests in order to avoid other people. A fearful person always wants to be amidst a group of people. There are others who cannot tolerate people and wish to be alone by themselves. These tendencies rise and fall in you. You don't want to be with people; yet at another time you can't be alone. What if I told you to be yourself - without talking or communicating with anybody; to be in silence? You can't be that either! After a few days, you start making signs with your hands, looking at people, holding their hands and walking around doing things. You want to be with people; want to talk to them. So, people who want to go away into the forests in order to find God can never find Him. Later, they realize that it was a foolish thing. This realization comes and then they come back. 'Aho! In the midst of people, I find nobody!' It's very beautiful. I don't see anybody in the midst of the people. I see big crowds like the forest. अरण्यमिव संवृत्तं । Just as in the forest, I can see all the trees as living begins; so, too, all these people. Even in the forest, I can feel they all are alive, and amidst life. Even trees express their emotions. When you go near or under a tree, they express their emotions. You can feel the vibrations. Many people feel the tree is inviting them. You want to go and visit it; to go round it and just feel it. Trees are like people, only they can't move away from where they are.

अरण्यमिव संवृत्तं । "I feel this is a forest." Just as the animals and trees are separate in a forest, here trees and animals are one as human beings. People behave like animals at different times! Human beings are cheetahs, monkeys, lions, elephants, tigers or crocodiles, all put into one. You can predict animals and what they will do; they have a set pattern of behavior. But you cannot predict with human beings. So it's more fun! अरण्यमिव संवृत्तं । 'I feel this is like a forest. I don't need to go anywhere!' Janaka must have thought to renounce the kingdom and go into the forest. The forest is very inviting, especially, being in the concrete jungle nature is very inviting. He said, 'Thus is nature!' अहो जनसमूहेऽपि । He suddenly realized, even staying amidst people, he did not feel different; no duality. That is ब्रह्म ज्ञान । क्व रतिं करवाण्यहम् ।

शरीरं स्वर्गनरकौ बन्धमोक्षौ भयं तथा ।
कल्पनामात्रमेवैतत् किं मे कार्यं चिदात्मनः ॥

This body, heaven and hell, bondage, liberation and fear, are the makings of your own mind. This body has been made by your mind, your mind first, then body. Concepts of heaven and hell are also creations of the mind. It is not the act. Your mind thinks this is heaven and that is hell, and goes in that direction. Heaven for someone may be hell for somebody else. Hell for someone may be heaven for someone else. An alcoholic would imagine all types of alcohol in heaven. That is what heaven is. It's also mentioned in some religions, not to drink alcohol here, because you will be deprived of a better quality of alcohol when you die and go to heaven.

If you dislike spicy food, then your imagination of hell would be having very spicy food stuffed into your mouth! You read about that in some of the Puranas. You will get very spicy hot food stuffed directly into your mouth! Your hands will be tied and your neck held up. There will be two men shovelling it inside your mind. You'll have no choice! Concepts of hell are all in your mind. If someone likes spicy food,it won't be hell for them, it will be heaven for them! One with a habit of eating food very fast would say, ' Oh, good!' If somebody puts food into my mouth, it is easy and if they push it down, it's even easier! I don't even have to do any work to chew the food! बन्धमेक्षौ । Liberation and bondage is also in your mind. I want to be free. Wanting to be free becomes another bondage; the biggest bondage! It doesn't matter if you are free or not; walk as if you are free! Just pretend for a while. Pretend 'I am free', and you will see you are in touch with the Truth. In fact all your crying, yelling, and shouting, is just an imagination, it is not reality. That is not your nature. Your being unhappy is really only your imagination or a mood. Unhappiness is not your nature! If you go a little deeper and dig deep into yourself, you'll see your unhappiness is just a surface layer.

Fear comes out of separation; out of two-ness, the duality; out of ignorance of your wholeness, your oneness with this entire existence. कल्पनामात्रमेवैतत् । A this is just imagination - a superimposition. किं मे कार्यं चिदात्मनः । When it is like this, what do I have to know? When I don't have any bondage, I don't have to strive to liberate myself. When there is no heaven or hell, what merit of demerit should I have? There is nothing I have to do. No merit or demerit. No bondage or liberation.

He says, 'I have no job, I have nothing to do!' Aho! A sudden realization that you are the king and you don't have to do any work! The King suddenly finds that he has been striving hard to earn piece of bread and a spoon of butter and jam. He suddenly realizes he is the king. He says, 'What do I do? I don't need to do anything.' किं मे कार्यं चिदात्मनः ।

PATANJALI YOGA SUTRAS | Sadhana makes these five kleshas, or sources of misery, as thin as possible with the passage of time.

🌹PATANJALI YOGA SUTRAS🌹

            🌀CHAPTER - 8🌀
~ The Veils Of Misery ~

                🌀DAY - 64🌀

🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

" अविद्यास्मितारागद्धेषाभिनिवेशाः क्लेशाः "

" Avidyasmitaaraagdweshaabhiniveshah kleshah "

Avidya asmita raga dwesha. Dwesha is hatred. Hatred or aversion brings an unpleasant experience. Aversion brings the same misery as craving. Both craving and aversion are sources of misery.

Abhinivesha is fear - fear of the unknown. Though intellectually you may know everything, you will have a bit of abhinivesha. This fear exists even in scholars.

Nature has imposed these fears in everybody. If they become thin, you will be evolved and if they remain thick, you will stay unevolved.

These fears and miseries have four stages.

The first stage is when they are dormant in you

The next sutra is prasupta avastha.

These miseries can be prasupta - asleep or dormant. Tanu means very feeble, almost non-existent.

Prachchinna means that when one of the miseries becomes dominant, the others subside. When there is a craving, aversion subsides. So does fear and the other miseries. And when there is avidya or ignorance, you are not even aware of the two things in you - you and your mind, you and your perception, your intellect. You are not aware that your mind is telling you something. You don't feel there is any difference between you and your mind. You are so totally caught up in a situation. When you are conscious and aware, then you know what your mind is telling you. You will see that difference in you. If you are conscious and aware and you do something wrong, you will wonder what has happened to you; whether you are going crazy? When a person has really become crazy, he will not be aware that he has become so. This is because he and his mind has become one. It is unable to see the distinction. Sometimes you get angry but you are not expressing the anger. You know that you are angry but you are not expressing the anger. You know that you are angry and you wonder why you are so. Or you may become lustful and be aware of it. But, a person who loses his temper is not aware that he is angry. He becomes the anger.

So, Sadhana makes these five kleshas, or sources of misery, as thin as possible with the passage of time. You had been getting angry before you were on the spiritual path and after, too. But there is a big difference in the quality of anger. There is a shift. After being on the spiritual path, the anger has become tanu - thinned down. The curtain has become more and more transparent.

To be continued.....

🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

Ignorance is considering that which is changing to be non-changing. We try to control others' mind. This is not possible. Someone may have loved you yesterday. But, they need not love you today or tomorrow. They would not know this themselves. You expect an enlightened behavior from everybody around you and when you do not get it, you become unhappy. You may not be behaving in an enlightened way, but you expect everyone around you to be enlightened and have unconditional love for you. A person who loves you unconditionally is rare - one in a million. But you expect it from everybody around you. This expectation makes you unhappy. This is what everybody is doing, consciously or unconsciously. Sometimes, they may not even know what they are expecting. But their expectation is something very big. They are seeking God in everybody. They are seeking God without understanding that God could behave in any manner that He wants. They are looking for a saintly God in everybody around them. Your concept of how things should be makes you miserable.

Asmita is oneness of our intellect and our self. Have you noticed that some people, stubbornly, stick to their opinion despite the facts that being contrary to it? They will argue meaninglessly. This happens because they are so stuck in themselves, in their intellect and thoughts, which they consider as their own. Asmita is the inability to see the Self and the buddhi or the intellect and the power of the organs of perception as separate entities.

Raga is craving. Craving arises because of a pleasant experience and it makes you miserable. Patanjali had said that there were only five sources of misery.

PATANJALI YOGA SUTRAS | Avidya is ignorance. It is the root cause of all suffering

" तपः स्वाध्याया ईश्वरा प्राणिधान् क्रियायोगः "

" Tapah swaadhyaaya ishwara pranidhaana kriya yogaha "

This is the yoga of action. But when you are doing something, you should think that you are not doing it. You should be a silent witness. There is a depth in you, a silent corner that does not change. All the activity is taking place in this silent space. Every atom is revolving around the nucleus and all the planets are moving around. Yet, there is silence.

The purpose is this is klesha tanukarana - to refute the suffering or misery in life. Samadhi bhaavanaarthaha - and to bring out samadhi, harmony and equanimity in life.

What are the root causes of misery in life?

Avidya, asmita, raga, dwesha, abhinivesha, panchakleshaaha.

Avidya is ignorance. It is the root cause of all suffering. Ignorance is to consider permanent that which is not so; to think or to understand that which is changing to be unchanging; that which is not joy to be joy, and which is not Self to be the Self. It is thinking you are the body when you are not; thinking that you are your thoughts and emotions when you are not. It is considering your body to be unchanging, when it is, actually, changing continuously. Doctors say that the blood is changed every twenty-four hours and in five days your stomach lining changes. And the skin changes in a month. Every cell in the body changes in a year. In a year all the old cells are dead and gone and you have new ones. Your body is new. Your mind is new. However, you have never considered your body like a river which is undergoing change all the time.

As you awaken to this truth, you will not identify with your old fears thoughts; with the old you. Your ignorance makes you hold on to them; hold on to your past. You hold on to your idea of who you are. People think it is a very complimentary to know who you are; to have an idea about yourself. But, if you have an idea of who you are, then you get stuck. The right attitude is to feel that you don't know who you are. This is because you are changing every moment. And you have understood this process when you do not know your own identity. A fixed idea about who you are destroys you totally. It stops your growth and limits your potential.

To be continued.....

Ishwara pranidhana. How can love for Lord blossom in us?

The first step is to see Lord as different from you - Lord and me. Two are needed for surrender - when you feel that there is Lord of all virtues and that you are nobody. In this nobody-ness, the union takes place. The realization dawns that all is the Lord and then that all is me, me, I, I ; that the universe is Lord's, your body is His, your mind with all its conflicts and your mind with all its beauty is also His. This offering itself is a technique which brings you back home.

Ishwara pranidhaana brings you samadhi, or ecstasy in that meditation. Offering candles, incense or flowers is not great. You should offer every part of your body, offer every moment of life, offer every breath, offer every thought - good, bad, pleasant, unpleasant, anything. Offer all those vasanas or those things which you consider are your negative points. Offer all your negativity and offer all your positivity. By offering all the negativity, you become free. Offering all the positive virtues you think you posses, you become free. You will not become arrogant. Your virtues make you arrogant. They make you behave as if you are special. And your drawbacks pull you down and make you feel bad about yourself and unconnected to the Divine, there is nothing that can make you feel connected. It is up to you to feel close to the Divine. It is up to you to feel close to anybody for that matter. Even if they do not feel close to you, you should start feeling close. It does not matter if they do not feel that you are close to them.

And how do you know this? You cannot know just by their behavior. It is not the right way to judge. This is because nothing else can convince you that you are close and dear to Divine other than your own mind and your own self. You should stop comparing. This applies to the Master, too. You may feel that somebody is close to the Master because he smiles and talks more often to them. That, he does not smile at or talk to you. This is your illusion. It does not matter if the Master does not talk to you. You should start feeling you are the only one and that you are the closest to him. Then you will see that what you want will start happening; that it will start blossoming. Whatever seed you sow, that will grow. If you sow the seed that you are hopeless and no good, then that no-good seed will grow. Often, weeds and other useless things grow without any cultivation. You do not need to cultivate weeds. That's why they are called weeds. They just grow and thrive on their own. But a useful plant needs some attention. In your field many weeds are coming up every day - useless, unwanted and unnecessary doubts and thoughts. You don't need to sow them. They just come up by themselves. By swaadhyaaya, you can weed them out and maintain only that, which is essential in life.

Why should we convert the bad into good?

Question - Gurudev, why should we convert the bad into good?

Gurudev Sri Sri - Our nature is to help. Our nature is to bring light. Our nature is to bring comfort to others, and make everyone feel happy. We can’t be in anyway different from that. If you ask alum, 'Why do you clean the water?' It will say, 'It is in my nature'. If you ask sun, 'Why do give light to people?' It will say, 'That is my nature'. If you ask a star, 'Why you twinkle in sky? It doesn’t help anybody'. It will say, 'That it is in my nature, to twinkle'. So it is our nature to help others, and to bring comfort to life. Every individual is in search of happiness. Even people who are doing bad things, are doing it in search of happiness. It is just that they don’t know that they won’t get it. If they knew that they won't get happiness by doing bad things, they would never do it. They are doing all the wrong things simply because they do not know that they won’t be able to get happiness out of it. So it is our job to make them aware, 'See, if you keep doing all these wrong things, you are only going to get more miserable. It is better that you do good things, then you will be happy'.

Shiva Sutras | We can reach our goal and raise the energy in the body and in life.

*Chapter 1 - The Mind Facing Inwards Is Always Happy*

*Day 4*

We can realise our self to the extent that we raise our energy. The first sutra is "Chaitanyamatma". You are alive, but you are living as though you were dead.

Sleeping, eating and talking - you are like one who walks in his sleep. Often, mothers feed milk to their half sleeping children, who do not remember anything later.

In the morning, they complain that she did not feed them food or milk. We also live like this, as though we eat while we are asleep and continue to slumber.

We do not have knowledge of ourself. How do we get knowledge about ourselves and about the soul? Knowledge grows as our energy rises - "Chaitanyamatma."

This is the first sutra. If we succeed in this sutra, then we can reach our goal and raise the energy in the body and in life.

The moment our energy is low, our speech gets confused, and we become lazy. When you talk too much your energy lowers, and you get bored.

If you have not experienced this, then do an experiment. Try to abuse someone for one and a half hours continuously, which may or may not even be possible - in a short time your stomach will feel sick.

We lose energy, which is required to digest food, and so the brain also stops working and starts functioning like a fool. Even if we eat more, vitality lowers.

Have you experienced this? We are not at our best on a day when we overeat, isn't it? There are Brahmins who specialise in eating at death ceremonies, especially in Mathura and other such places.

They are called "panda". Their only job is to eat wherever there is death ceremony. When many people die, they are in great demand and sometimes have to eat at as many as five or six places in a single day.

Once, a son accompanied his father to the ceremony and thev had a competition to see who could eat more. During the meal, the son drank a glass of water.

The father got angry and slapped his son, asking him, "Why are you drinking instead of eating?" But they were not able to talk about it then.

On reaching home, again the father asked the son the same thing. “I drank to settle the food I had eaten so I could eat more”. The father slapped him again and said, "Why didn't you tell me there?”

I could have done the same and eaten more. On another occasion two ladies, who were neighbors, were talking.

One was making the bed for her husband at one in the afternoon and so the other lady asked her, “Why are you making the bed so early?”

The first one replied, “My husband has gone for food at a death ceremony. He will have to sleep as soon as he returns home”.

Hearing that, the other lady said, "That is better. For my husband, I have to send the bed to wherever he has gone for the ceremony. After eating he cannot even make it back home”.

Eating is also tiring. Where is your energy if you overeat? It is the same with those who oversleep - they cannot be full of vitality.

We can realise our self to the extent that we raise our consciousness, our vitality. That is why we should do pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya and meditation.

When you start doing these practices, then consciousness dawns. That is what the first sutra means. You are searching for your self.

Your self is not something that is separate from you. Your consciousness is your self, from which everything has been created.

It is possible to experience this only when you become one with your consciousness. The same consciousness also makes it possible for you to understand yourself.

Only this consciousness can understand itself. As consciousness, or energy, increases knowledge also grows. One who is awake has tremendous consciousness.

Even the sleeping man has consciousness, but only the one who is awake knows it while the other one is unaware of it.

When we look at nature, consciousness is visible in every atom. Only in some it rests in a dormant state, in some it is partially expressed and in others it is expressed inabundance.

If one understands this and wakes up to this consciousness, one can reach the light of joy in our body is our consciousness.

We chant, do yagyas and practice yoga in order to raise our level of consciousness and move towards the goal of self realisation.

In fact, raising the level of consciousness is not the right phrase, because consciousness does not increase or decrease.

It is only when we realise that everything is consciousness that we start to experience consciousness.

What is your message on India’s 75th Independence Day?

Question - Gurudev, what is your message on India’s 75th Independence Day?

Gurudev Sri Sri - There are two types of freedom - one is political freedom, that we got 75 years ago. The other freedom is to overcome our mental and emotional slavery. This can happen only through education and culture. This is extremely essential. In this country, if we do not achieve the freedom of thought, if every individual’s thinking and understanding doesn’t move forward in a new way with respect to our old beliefs, we will remain weak. To get rid of our weaknesses our youth will have to move forward, and the freedom of thought, freedom of culture, ethical and moral adherence, and patriotism, all these need to blossom in our lives. These are within us. We need to recognise and strengthen them further. This is what we are working towards. On this Independence Day, let us remember the sacrifice made by generations and move towards a self-reliant, drug-free and violence-free India. Let us invoke our inner strength to face current challenges. Independence always goes with discipline. Independence is also when you recognise the inter dependence of our existence.

Shiva Sutras | When you get angry, the area between the two eyebrows ignites, when you become unhappy, the throat starts to choke, when you feel hatred, a sensation happens in the heart region.

*Chapter 2 - Energy Centres*

*Day 13*

Look at a child five or six years old or a toddler of three to six months. They are filled with enthusiasm. It overflows from every cell of their body.

Compare children with grown-ups and see if enthusiasm increases or decreases with age. Are we really living when we lose enthusiasm?

From the age of 20, we started to slowly die. Today, this starts at 15. Dying starts as soon as you lose enthusiasm, and life is over by the time we reach the age of 50.

Although there is no enthusiasm left in life, still we call it life. Today, college students have no enthusiasm. They have already grown old, and have lost their enjoyment of life.

After the television age started in India, people began maturing
very quickly and now life passes very fast. The people of the last two or three generations were so enthusiastic even at 60-70 of age.

They are not totally gone, but if you observe the majority of people in schools, colleges and towns, very few of them have cheerful expressions.

Instead, they rush about with long faces, frowning. Why lead such a life? Or look at the people who visit temples. Some of them are so fearful that they tremble while others walk with scrunched eyebrows.

People with cheerful faces are rarely seen. This has happened because of our "Vishva" - we have made such a world. Now to drop this, should you run away from society to some cave in the Himalayas?

You will not find happiness just by entering a cave. The world originates in your mind. Only you have created it, and only you can drop it. The solution is in your own body.

There are different types of centers in your body. Bring your attention to these centers, observe them and the world of worries and thoughts that trouble your mind will disappear.

There will be peace. This is a very important sutra. When we feel anger, emotion or excitement, then different parts of our body experience various sensations.

When you get angry, the area between the two eyebrows ignites, when you become unhappy, the throat starts to choke, when you feel hatred, a sensation happens in the heart region.

What happens when you feel jealous? The stomach churns. Goodwill is also generated in the stomach. For example, we say, "I had a hearty laugh," and when one feels very happy the area around the navel experiences some sensations.

Similarly, when we feel jealousy or love, there is a sensation around the heart. Likewise, when you are sad there is a feeling in the throat and also when you want to express gratitude.

You cannot express it in words, and we often say that the throat chokes. All together in our body there are 7 chakras, or energy centers, and all 27,000 subtle nerves in our body are connected to these 7 centers.

The first center is maladhara chakra. Here, the energy is either dormant or active. Bring your attention to this center. All through our lives, though we have a body we do not place our attention on it or even observe it.

Our body is a wonder. Do you know our body is like a city with millions of living organisms inside? Some are our friends, and some are our enemies.

Your intestines holds 50,000 different types of bacteria, which are all helpful. We call the body ‘purusha’ meaning whose who live in a city, because the body is like a city.

Shiva Sutras | Enthusiasm is a quality of life, yet some people find only boredom and unhappiness.

*Chapter 2 - Energy Centres*

*Day 12*

The mind is such that if we have to scold someone we pick up the phone right away and shout at him without caring what time of day or night it is.

You may not be aware if the person on the other end of the phone is listening or not. He may have hung up, but once you have shouted you are at peace.

The mind wants to do bad things right away. The energy in you that moves you to act, also will lead you to a state where you are a witness and do not even desire to act.

Consciousness blossoms when you are a witness. Then even amidst all your actions consciousness will continue to blossom. So drop all your concepts and put in your full efforts.

Suppose you are unable to do this because of weakness, or you do put in your 100%, but restlessness increases. When you direct your attention to your energy centers, the world that you have created disappears.

The question arises, if one rises to a higher position only by hard work, does this justify all those workers and businessmen who work continuously, sweating it out, night and day?

And for what purpose? Some
Profit? Do they find only profit by working so hard? Sometimes blood pressure rises or ulcers appear, or the world overwhelms them, and anger and hatred begin.

By working only to fulfill desires, you invite things that are undesired. When we look around and feel that others have more than what we have. life fills with jealousy.

Look at the jealousy in our schools children say, "She got higher marks than me, and even though we wrote the same answer, she came first while I came third."

Or if the person sitting next to you looks and smiles and has a conversation with a person sitting on the other side of you, then it is enough for you to become shocked and uncomfortable.

This world is in our own mind. We look only at the world that exists in our mind, which we imagine in our own way, though the world outside may be different.

70% of the problems in our life start because of our imagination. If you are unhappy or have had an unpleasant life, it is due to the world in your mind.

You have created such a universe. “Vishva” is a wonderful word - “Shiva” means either yesterday or tomorrow, and “Vishwa” means the special yesterday or tomorrow that we create in our m own mind.

In our mind, we imagine certain things as huge, though we are uncertain how they actually are. We are stuck in worries about yesterday and imaginings about tomorrow, which is why we lack enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm is a quality of life, yet some people find only boredom and unhappiness. Observe, in what direction is your life moving- day by day, are you gaining enthusiasm or losing it?

Shiva Sutras | Why is skill needed? Skill is needed only to avoid misery. Yoga and sadhana are the path to overcome misery.

*Chapter 2 - Energy Centres*

*Day 11*

Why is skill needed? Skill is not needed to be unhappy. Skill is needed only to avoid misery. Yoga and sadhana are the path to overcome misery.

Yoga does not only mean physical postures. When you are surrounded by light, there is no question of darkness. Where is misery when you are drowning in joy?

Where is poverty if you are rich inside? So never sav, "I will do sadhana only when God asks me to do it." or I will meditate only when Gurudev makes me meditate."

Has Gurudev not invited you? Does God not want you to do sadhana? God is shouting at the top of his voice. All the rishis from Maharishi Vasa's time are calling to you in one loud voice, inviting you.

They have spoken so many times, "Move ahead. Wake up. Stand up'. We say, "Let it happen if God wishes," only when we do not want to act.

If you want to do something good, do it immediately, but if you want to do something bad, brush it aside. Once when I was in Canada for a satsang, two and a half hours, at 12:30 in the night, an elderly Indian lady came.

One of the volunteers asked her to return the next morning, but she insisted and started knocking on my door, demanding, "I need to see Gurudev right now."

I came out and asked her, "What's the matter?" She said, "I have decided to donate $200 to children." I said, "Okay, but why the great hurry?

It is past mid-night, and you have come from so far in the middle of the night when you could have donated it tomorrow or the day after.

I will be here for some time. Why did you come so late?" She said, "Gurudev, I can't trust my own mind. Today I feel like giving, so I am giving right now."

Then, at 1 am, she narrated a story to me. She said, "Gurudev, I would like to tell you a story." I replied, "Okay, tell me the story.

She started - “A trader was going to Kashi by boat. On the way, his boat started sinking. He saw a fisherman on a nearby boat and asked him to take him aboard and save him”.

He told the fisherman that otherwise he would drown and die. And that if he took him aboard, then he would give him all his property. The fisherman agreed.

Once the boat started moving safely towards the shore, the trader regained his senses and started repenting for having offered all his property to the fisherman.

Then he told the fisherman
that although he was ready to give him all his property, his wife would not agree to it, so he would only give him half of it, as he had to give the other half to his wife and family.

For that he was helpless, as they also needed the property. The fisherman kept silent and continued rowing towards the shore. Then the trader wondered why he had offered him half his property.

What great thing had he done by saving him from the river? It is his duty to ferry people across, and after all protecting others is only humane.

He was just doing his duty and would have committed a sin if had he not saved him. He had actually protected the fisherman from committing a sin.

So he told the fisherman he would only give him a quarter of his property. The fisherman did not make a sound. Then, when they reached the shore, the trader gave him a five rupee coin, but the fisherman said that he did not need his money.

Shocked, the trader insisted, 'No, no, you take this. Have tea for yourself and get some biscuits for your children." Then the elderly woman said, "Gurudev, such is the game of the mind. If one has to do some good work”.

“it is best to do it immediately or else one keeps postponing it and never does it. That is why I have come in the middle of the night."

Shiva Sutras | Without effort, you cannot prosper. Only when you apply effort will you get results.

*Chapter 2 - Energy Centres*

*Day 10*

Effort and continual practice are required in both worldly and spiritual matters. Some people say, "I will go on a pilgrimage when God desires," or "I will go for sadhana only if Guruji makes me go."

This happens only when the mind is not firm and is wavering in its commitment. You do not apply the same rule to other areas.

For instance, you do not say, "I will eat only if God feeds me," or "I will see the movie only if God shows it." Only by working hard and applying full effort can you experience good samadhi.

A lazy person never reaches samadhi. Therefore, satsang, sadhana, and seva, all three are very important. When you do these, you enter into yourself, into sivatattva. Then it becomes easy to experience love and knowledge.

We treat our wishes and God's wishes differently. We accept things according to our convenience. When you succeed in something, you say, "I won by putting in my full effort,"

But if you lose you say, "What can be done? It is God's will." You never admit that you did not put in your effort 100%. Actually, God did it, otherwise it would not have happened, even if you tried.

So, God alone does everything. This is important to understand the efforts that you make are also Shiva. If God alone is the doer and nothing exists except for him, then he is also enjoying the fruit of action.

If God has made you a thief, then through you God will also experience punishment in jail. Suppose you overeat and say, "I have a stomach ache,"

How is it possible that you have a stomach ache? The aching stomach is God's. If you are not the doer, then you are not the enjoyer of actions either.

Remember that he is the doer and also the enjover. You will not get results if you merely keep thinking about a work that you have no interest in doing.

If you want to do something, do it 100% and complete it, and if you want to leave a project, then drop it and drop it in your mind too.

Whatever you do, do it 100%. It is not right to say, "Why should I do it if everything is being done by God?" Only God is doing everything, and he is doing work through you.

The God in you is eager to work. Therefore, allow God to work, why do you stop God mid-way? This is only acceptable when you feel God Himself is stopping mid-way.

If you sit and start wondering about it, you will wind up utterly confused. Come out of it, and let your mind be empty. The energy you have to do work is Shiva.

Your faults also belong to Him. Virtues and happiness come
from knowledge while flaws and misery come from ignorance.

If happiness and misery are the same to you, then knowledge and ignorance are the same. You will not feel anger or hatred towards anyone. Liberated and pure, you will march towards the self.

Krishna tells Arjuna, "Treating with equanimity happiness and misery, gain and loss, victory and defeat, fight the war." Fight without feverishness. Look at your actions as a witness.

The heart beats, blood flows, breath moves in and out, digestion and other functions continue. These processes happen on their own.

Even thoughts appear by themselves. Realise that there is no distinction between a complete doer and a complete observer. Then you will become the doer of everything.

This should happen naturally. You should still act. Do not be without doing. The rain falls only when it is time to rain, and the sun rises and sets in its own time.

You cannot affect these, but when the sun shines, open the windows. Only then can the rays of sunlight enter. If you open the windows at 12 midnight expecting the sunlight to enter, how can it happen?

If the windows are shut it will be dark inside even if the sun is shining. Nature is giving you everything, but still you should put in your full effort.

Without effort, you cannot prosper. Only when you apply effort will you get results.
