Food and Sex

There are two basic instincts in human beings and they have been with you in all your lives.

-Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji

There are two basic instincts in human beings, one is food and the other is sex. These have been with you in all your lives, when you were an animal and now as a human being. You are born of these two: food and sex.

It is so beautiful that in this country (India) both connected with the Divine. The food is connected with God. In the Upanishads, it is said "Food is God." When you consider food as God, you will not overeat. Not only do you fill food, but you eat with such honor. No festival in India passes without food. And when you go to the temple, the first thing they give is a little bit of Prasad. Prasad is just some food that is given. Without Prasad there is no pilgrimage or festival. The food is connected with God.

Similarly, sex is also connected with God. Otherwise, you keep sex separate and think that this is my material life and think of God as different. But here in India, the ancient peoples linked sex with God so that no aspect of you remains far from God. A basic instinct does not stay away from God.
Then, when you honor sex and consider it part of Divinity, then your obsession disappears, lust disappears and the sacred dawns. And the basic instinct, of being an aggressive lust, becomes a submissive love.
This is the ancient thought. But some people are misusing yoga to enjoy carnal instincts, this is wrong. This is a mistake. It should be otherwise. Whenever there is a carnal instinct, transform it into an internal Divine experience.
There is a beautiful Sanskrit word called Atma Rati, union with one's being; rejoicing in oneself.

There are two things, Prakriti (nature) and Purusha (consciousness). Nature and consciousness interact all the time. Your body and your soul: your body is feminine and your soul is masculine. So their coupling is happening all the time, and seeing that union within oneself is Samadhi.

That is why Samadhi is considered a thousand times happier than carnal instincts. Whatever the joy of sex, Samadhi is a thousand times happier because there is no effort and there is no action there. It is only Being and only Being. Then, only the consciousness of the Being, the game and the display of consciousness comes to one's consciousness, comes to one's experience. This is very beautiful.

Do not keep any corner of your existence away from Divinity. The Divine must be interwoven in every aspect of your life and this is called Brahmacharya, which means moving with the infinite, uniting with the infinite.

Isn't that so beautiful? It is a very deep and very high knowledge. If you don't understand it at once, it doesn't matter, keep listening and understanding and one day you'll say, "Ah! That's what Guruji was talking about."

So here (in India) when you go to any temple anywhere, you find both aspects: Shiva and Parvathi, which symbolize Prakrati and Purusha, consciousness and matter. This is to recognize duality first and then see unity. They are not two, they are not different, but they are two sides of the same coin. You are complete

What does this mean? You are male and female. When leaving this label, "I am a man", "I am a woman" - Leaving your identity, this is Vedanta; The highest philosophy in the universe.

We continue to identify ourselves, "I am a man," "I am a woman," "I am old," "I am young," "I am polite," "I am illiterate." Throw away all these labels. What remains is pure awareness. Don't even say: "I am conscience." I just know that you are aware and don't even say it. Don't go saying that I am nothing.

Adi Shankar once said: "He who labels himself as something is a fool and he who labels himself as nothing is a greater fool." He who is nothing does not speak, so shut up. How can you say "I am nothing" when you say something? There can be no one there saying, "I am nothing." So shut up.

Then, when you consider that the basic instincts of food and sex are sacred, aggression in you disappears and surrender dawns in you. Gratitude and love dawns in you.

That is when it is said that the devotee and the Divine have become One. They have merged into one!

It's so fascinating, isn't it?

-Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji
