Vilamal Patanjali Manoharar Temple: Vilamal is on the outskirts of Tiruvarur town, just two Kms from the city centre. The old names of this place are Thiruvilamar and Thiruvaraham. This is an ancient temple which is a Paadal Petra Sthalam with thevarams by Thirugnanasambandar. This temple we are going to visit is that of Shri Madhurabhashini ( Thenmozhiammai/Yazhinum Menmozhiammai-Ambal with a voice milder and more melodious than the music of the instrument Yazh) sametha Patanjali Manoharar (Vilamar/Vimalar). The sthala vrukshams are Vilvam and Kiluvai and the theertham is Agni. The temple is open from 7.30 am to noon and from 4.30 to 7.30 pm . Contact telephone numbers are 94894 79896 and 99428 81778. It is relatively a small temple (when compared to the nearby Tiruvarur temple) without a Rajagopuram. The ceilings of the temple prakaram, are covered in paintings depicting the sthala puranam and various episodes connected with this temple. They are believed to be from the Tanjavur Nayak period.
This temple is unique in several aspects. I made a passing reference to Shiva’s Ajapa Nadanam. Ajapa means non-uttering meditation. It specifically refers to a story associated with this temple. Sages Patanjali and Vyakrapaathar had enjoyed the dance of Lord Nataraja at Chidambaram. They also wanted to see His Ajapa and Rudra dances. They were advised to visit Thiruvarur and Vilamar.
Here, Lord Vishnu made an image of Somaskanda ( Thiruvarur is a Somaskanda Kshetram)and kept It on His chest and meditated on the image of this Murthy. His breathing was so controlled that it corresponded to the vertical and horizontal movements of the Somaskanda Murthy. Here, Vishnu does not utter any word and was simply meditating on the oscillations of the Somaskandar. This is called Ajapa Nadanam or unchanted Ajapa.
Patanjali worshipped Shri Kamalambal at Tiruvarur and as advised by Her, made a Lingam out of the sand from Deva Loka ( Vimalakka Vairam) and worshipped the Lord. Pleased with these prayers, the Lord showed both His feet (Rudra Paadam) and Ajapa dance. Since Patanjali enjoyed this in this place, the Lord came to be called Patanjali Manoharar. Since both the Rishis saw only Shivalingams all over this place, they were afraid of walking on this space. While Patanjali took the form of snake ( He is Adisesha’s avatar), Vykrapathar used his tiger foot. The Lord also showed His feet to the sages as well as Vishnu, Brahma, Musukunda Chakravarthi and Surya.
The Lord is made of sand and He faces east. However, when the aarti is shown, the light is reflected from the Lingam and the entire Lingam looks as a single Jothi ( Jyotiswaroopam). In the Moolasthanam, there are three important things to be seen- the Lingam, the Feet of the Lord in front of the Lingam and the dancing Nataraja on the back of the Lingam. This combination is not present in any other Shiva temple. Hence it is customary for those visiting Thiruvarur to have the Mukha (face) darshan there and then visit this temple to get Paada darshanam (worshipping the Feet).
Another important aspect of the Paadha Darshanam is that It is the left foot of the Lord. As per the Ardhanareeswara principle, the left side of the Murthy, belongs to Ambal. Hence by worshipping this Paadham, one gets the benefit of worshipping both Swamy and Ambal simultaneously. It is normally covered and revealed only on the day of Arudra Darsanam (Tiruvadirai in Tamil, in the month of Dec-Jan) as the merger of Ambal and Lord, was believed to have happened on that day.
Ambal is having an wonderful Tamil name-Yazhinum Menmozhiammai. I have come not across this name in any other temple. She faces south. This is one of the Shakthi Peetams and Ambal is having the Sri Chakram in Her hand. Agasthyar has worshipped Her as Sri Dharini, Rajasimhasaneswari and Lalithambika. Shiva is credited with the Third Eye on His forehead, which is always hot. In this temple, Ambal is believed to be having a third eye, which is very cool. This name Madhurabhashini also finds a place in our Rashtriya Geetham, Vandemataram- Madhurabhashinim. Parents perform honey abhishekam to Her before admitting their children in schools. A small portion of this honey is put in the child’s tongue so that he/she would do well in studies. People having speech related problems, visit this temple and perform this pooja.
In Shiva temples, normally Annabhishekam ( covering the Lord with cooked rice) on the Full moon day of Tamil month Aipasi ( Oct-Nov). This temple sees Annabhishekam on all the New Moon Days! Those who do not perform Tarpan/Sraddham for their parents, take bath in the Kamalalayam tank in Tiruvarur and the Agni Theertham here and then perform Annabhishekam on Amavasya days. They also light Moksha Deepam. This would ensure that the ancestors bless the devotee. Performing this on the Mahalaya Amavasya ( Sep-Oct) is considered very auspicious. The Moksha deepam ritual is also performed for those who are in death bed and are about to die. Moksha Deepam is also lit for those who had accidental/early deaths.
Since this is a rare temple where Shiva is present in the body of Vishnu. Mahalakshmi ‘s idol looks different- the Iravathams stand on either side of Her! Among the other deities, special mention must be made about Raja Durga, a name not commonly seen. She appears with eight hands, holding Soolam and a parrot in two of Her hands. She sits on her lion mount and blesses the devotees. Her worship is specially suggested for those having Rahu Ketu related problems.
Readers familiar with Ramayanam, might have heard about the Puthra Kaameshti Yagnam performed by Dasaratha for getting children. This is one of the temples where he worshipped before performing the Yagna. Since there is Rudra Paadam and Bhairavar being present as Kshetra Paalakar, there is no separate shrine for Navagrahams. Bhairavar is a huge vigraham and He faces south. As the Lord showed His Viswaroopam while performing the Rudra Thandavam, the head of Nandi is turned in one direction.

சிவனின் தேவாரப்பாடல் பெற்ற 274 சிவாலயங்களில் இது 153 வது தேவாரத்தலம் ஆகும்.
இங்குள்ள மூலவரின் முன்பு தீப வழிபாடு நடக்கும் போது, அந்த ஒளி லிங்கத்தில் பிரதிபலித்து, லிங்கமானது தீபஜோதியாக தெரிவதை காணலாம்.
சிவபெருமானின் ருத்ரபாதம் இருக்கும் தலம், சிவபெருமான் தனது திருப்பாதம் காட்டி நடனம் ஆடிய தலமாதலால் சிவபெருமான் காட்டிய ருத்ரபாதத்திற்கு இன்றளவும், தினமும் பூஜைகள் சிறப்பாக நடைபெற்று வருகிறது.
திருவாரூரில் தியாகராஜரின் முகத்தையும், இங்கு சிவபாதத்தையும் ஒரே நாளில் தரிசித்தால் பிறவாநிலை கிடைக்கும் என்பது ஐதீகம்.
பதஞ்சலி முனிவர் ஈசனின் நடனக்கோலம் காண தவமிருந்தார். இவரது தவத்திற்கு மகிழ்ந்த ஈசன் தில்லையில் தனது திருநடனத்தை காண்பித்தார். இந்த நடனத்தை வியாக்ர பாதரும் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்தார். அத்துடன் இரு முனிவர்களும் சிவனிடம், ஐயனே! உனது நடனம் கண்டோம். இந்த ஆனந்த நடனத்துடன் தங்களின் அஜபா நடனத்தையும், ருத்ர தாண்டவத்தையும் என்றென்றும் காண விரும்புகிறோம். மேலும் உன் பக்தர்களுக்கும் உனது திருவடி தரிசனத்தை காண்பித்து அருள வேண்டும்,என வேண்டினர். அதற்கு ஈசன், நீங்கள் இருவரும் ஸ்ரீபுரம் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் திருவாரூர் செல்லுங்கள். அங்கே எனது நடனத்தையும், திருவடி தரிசனத்தையும் காண்பீர்கள்,என்றார்.அதன்படி இருவரும் திருவாரூர் வந்தனர். அங்கே எங்கு பார்த்தாலும் சிவலிங்கமே காட்சியளித்தது. எனவே பதஞ்சலி தன் உடலை பாம்பாகவும், வியாக்ரபாதர் தன் காலை புலிக்காலாகவும் மாற்றி திருவாரூர் கமலாம்பாளை வணங்கினர்.
அவள் கூறியபடி விளமல் என்ற இடத்தில் விமலாக்க வைரம் என்ற தேவலோக மண்ணில் பதஞ்சலி முனிவர் லிங்கம் பிடித்து வழிபட்டார். இந்த வழிபாட்டின் பலனாக சிவன் தோன்றி, அஜபாவன நர்த்தனம் ஆடி தன் பாதத்தை காட்டி அருளினார். இந்த சிவன் பதஞ்சலி மனோகரர் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டார். சிவபெருமான் நடன மாடிய போது காட்டிய திருவடி ருத்ரபாதம் எனப்பட்டது. அவர் நடனமாடிய இடம் விளமல் எனப்பட்டது. இதற்கு திருவடிஎனப்பொருள். இந்த தரிசனத்தை விஷ்ணு, பிரம்மா, முசுகுந்த சக்கரவர்த்தி மற்றும் தேவாதி தேவர்கள் கண்டு களித்தனர். சிவபெருமான் காட்டிய ருத்ரபாதத்திற்கு இன்றளவும், தினமும் பூஜைகள் சிறப்பாக நடைபெற்று வருகிறது. எனவே இத்தலம் திருவடி க்ஷேத்திரம், திருவிளமல், சிவபாத ஸ்தலம் என போற்றப்படுகிறது.
மூலஸ்தானத்தில் லிங்கம், அதற்கு பின்புறம் நடராஜர், முன்புறம் சிவன் பாதம் என ஒரே சன்னதி யில் சிவனின் மூன்று வடிவங்களைத் தரிசிக்கலாம். திருவாரூரில் தியாகராஜரின் முகத்தையும், இங்கு சிவபாதத்தையும் ஒரே நாளில் தரிசித்தால் பிறவாநிலை கிடைக்கும் என்பது ஐதீகம். மூலவர் சிவன் மணல் லிங்கமாக காட்சி தந்தாலும், அவருக்கு தீபாராதனை காட்டும்போது, லிங்கம் ஜோதி சொரூபமாகக் காட்சியளிக்கிறது.
சிவனுக்கு வெப்பமான நெற்றிக்கண் இருப்பதைப்போல், இத்தல அம்மன் மதுரபாஷினிக்கு சந்திரனைப் போல் குளிர்ச்சியான நெற்றிக்கண் இருக்கிறது. பங்கிம் சந்திர சாட்டர்ஜியால் எழுதப்பட்ட வந்தேமாதரம் தேசபக்திப்பாடலில் வரும் மதுரபாஷிநீம் என்ற வரிக்கு அடிப்படையான இவள், மனிதனுக்கு தேவையான 34 சவுபாக்கியங்களையும் தரும் சடாட்சர தேவியாக, ராஜராஜேஸ்வரியாக, கல்விக்கு அரசியாக அருளுகிறாள். இதனால் இத்தலம் வித்யாபீடமாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. அகத்தியர் இவளை, ஸ்ரீர தாரிணி, ராஜசிம்மாசனேஸ்வரி, ஸ்ரீலலிதாம்பிகையே என புகழ்ந்து போற்றியுள்ளார். குழந்தைகளை பள்ளிகளில் சேர்க்கும் பெற்றோர்கள் மதுரபாஷினிக்கு தேன் அபிஷேகம், சிறப்பு அர்ச்சனை செய்து, அந்த தேனை குழந்தையின் நாவில் தடவி வேண்டிக்கொண்டு, பின்பு பள்ளிகளில் சேர்க்கும் நடைமுறை இங்கு உள்ளது.இதனால் குழந்தைகளின் கல்வி சிறக்கும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை. வாய் பேச முடியாதவர்கள், திக்குவாய் பிரச்னை உள்ளவர்களும் இந்த அம்மனை வேண்டினால் விரைவில் குணமாகும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை.
பொதுவாக சிவன் கோயில்களில் ஐப்பசி பவுர்ணமியன்றுதான் அன்னாபிஷேகம் செய்வர். இங்கு எல்லா அமாவாசை நாட்களிலும் அன்னாபிஷேகம் செய்யப்படுகிறது. பித்ருக்களுக்கு முறையாக திதி, தர்ப்பணம் செய்யாதவர்கள் அமாவாசை யன்று, திருவாரூர் கமலாலய தீர்த்தத்திலுள்ள (தெப்பக்குளம்) பிதுர் கட்டத்திலும், இங்குள்ள அக்னி தீர்த்தத்திலும் நீராடுகின்றனர். பின், சுவாமிக்கு அன்னாபிஷேகம் செய்து, மோட்ச தீபம் ஏற்றி வழிபடுகின்றனர். இதனால் முன்னோர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்து, தலைமுறை சிறக்க ஆசிர்வதிப்பர். புரட்டாசி மாதம் வரும் மகாளய அமாவாசையன்று இந்த வழிபாட்டைச் செய்வது இன்னும் சிறப்பு. விபத்தில் அகால மரணமடைந்தவர்களுக்காகவும், இறக்கும் தருவாயில் அவஸ்தைப்படுவோருக்காகவும் இங்கு மோட்ச தீபம் ஏற்றி வழிபடுகின்றனர். இத்தல விநாயகராக சித்தி விநாயகர் காட்சி தருகிறார். இங்குள்ள ராஜதுர்க்கை எட்டு கைகளுடன் வீற்றிருக்கிறாள். வலது கையில் சூலமும், இடது கையில் கிளியும் தாங்கி சிம்ம வாகனத்தில் இருப்பது சிறப்பு. செவ்வாய் தோஷம் உள்ளவர்கள், ராகு, கேது தோஷம் உள்ளவர்கள் இந்த துர்க்கையை வழிபாடு செய்தால் தோஷம் விலகும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை.
தசரதர் புத்திர பாக்கியம் வேண்டி வழிபாடு செய்த தலங்களுள் இதுவும் ஒன்று.சிவனின் பாத தரிசனம் காட்டிய தலமாதலால் இங்கு நவகிரகங்கள் கிடையாது. இத்தலத்தில் நந்தி, சிவபெருமான் விஸ்வரூபம் எடுத்து ஆடிய வடகிழக்கு திசையை நோக்கி தலை திருப்பி இருப்பதை இன்றும் காணலாம். பைரவர் இத்தலத்தில் நவகோள்களின் அதிபதியாக க்ஷேத்ரபாலகராக இருப்பதால் இங்கு நவகிரக சன்னதி கிடையாது. விநாயகரின் கையில் மத்தக மணியுடன் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். விஷ்ணுவின் தலையில் சிவனின் திருவடி இருப்பதும், எம சண்டிகேஸ்வரர் வித்தியாசமாக அமர்ந்திருப்பதும் இத்தலத்தின் சிறப்பம்சமாகும். இறக்கும் தருவாயில் இருப்பவர்களுக்கு மோட்ச தீபம் ஏற்றினால் முக்தி கிடைக்கும் என்பது ஐதீகம். இரண்டு பக்கமும் ஐராவதம் நிற்க, மகாலட்சுமி வித்தியாசமான கோலத்தில் அமர்ந்திருக்கிறாள்.
கோவில் அமைப்பு:
சிறிய ஊர், கோயிலும் சிறியது. கிழக்கு நோக்கிய சன்னதி. கோயில் எதிரில் தீர்த்தம் உள்ளது. கோபுரவாயிலின் இருபுறமும் விநாயகரும் முருகனும் வீற்றிருக்கின்றனர். உள்ளே நந்தி, பலிபீடம், பிராகாரம் நந்தவனமாக உள்ளது. பிராகாரத்தில் சனீஸ்வரன், சந்திர, சூரியர், விநாயகர், கஜலட்சுமி, உள்ளனர். முன்மண்டபத்தில் பதஞ்சலியின் உருவமும் மகாமண்டபத்தில் வியாக்ரபாதர் உருவமும் உள்ளன. கோஷ்டத்தில் தக்ஷிணாமூர்த்தி, விஷ்ணு, பிரம்மா, துர்க்கை, ஆகியோர் எழுந்தருளியுள்ளனர்.

சிவபெருமானின் ருத்ரபாதம் இருக்கும் தலம், சிவபெருமான் காட்டிய ருத்ரபாதத்திற்கு இன்றளவும், தினமும் பூஜைகள் சிறப்பாக நடைபெற்று வருகிறது.
புத்திர பாக்கியம் வேண்டுபவர்கள், திருமண தடை உள்ளவர்கள், கல்வியில் மேன்மையடைய விரும்புவர்கள், தீராத நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் இங்குள்ள அக்னி தீர்த்தத்தில் நீராடி, சிவனுக்கு அன்னம் சாத்தி வழிபட்டால் சிறந்த பலன் கிடைக்கும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை.
வாய் பேச முடியாதவர்கள், திக்கு வாய் உள்ளவர்கள் மதுரபாஷினி அம்மனை வழிபாடு செய்தால் பலன் நிச்சயம்.
