Though there are many temples for Vaidyanatha Shiva, the temples for Dhanvantri are rare. The famous Sri Ranganathaswamy temple of Srirangam has an interesting connection with Dhanvantri and the part played by Ramanujacharya in this. There is a shrine for Dhanvantri in the fourth prakara of the temple. There are stone records of Hoysala kings dated 1257 and 1493 AD which mention gifts to this temple of Dhanvantri.
Ramanujacharya was a great devotee of this temple and had emotional attachment. Different types of offerings (naivedya) were being offered to the deity in large quantities. One day when Ramanujacharya visited this temple, he found Sri Ranganatha to be sick. Ramanujacharya was very sad because his favourite god was suffering from some disease. Immediately he made enquiries about the food offered to the deity the previous day. He was informed that the deity was offered Jambu fruit (nerale or jamoon) along with curd and rice.
Ramanujacharya immediately understood that the combination of Jambu and curd had caused cold to the deity and hence he is sick. He ordered that a medicinal decoction (kashaya) be prepared and shown to Dhanvantri for his approval in his shrine and this should be carried to Sri Ranganatha and offered to him before the closure of the temple every night. Thus the practice of offering to the deity is more than 800 years old. Thus Dhanvantri is believed to be capable of curing even Vishnu also. That is the greatness of Dhanvantri, the divine physician and the founder of Ayurveda. Even today people recite Sanskrit verses praising him to get cured from disease. His birthday is celebrated the next day after Deepavali.
ஸ்ரீ ரங்கம் பெரிய பெருமாளுக்கு உடம்பு சரியில்லாமல் போன கதை தெரியுமா!
ஒரு சுவையான சம்பவம் ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜர் அவதார சமயத்தில் நடந்தது.
ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜர், பெரிய பெருமாளை பார்க்க சென்றார்.
அப்பொழுது தைல காப்பு சாத்தி இருந்தார் பெரிய பெருமாள்.
என்ன காரணத்தாலோ, துணியால் போர்த்திக்கொண்டு படுத்து இருந்தார் பெரிய பெருமாள்.
இதை பார்த்த ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜருக்கு பெரிய பெருமாளுக்கு உடம்புக்கு ஏதோ சௌகரியம் இல்லையோ என்று மனதில் தோன்றியது.
அர்ச்ச அவதாரம் தானே, கல் தானே என்று நினைக்கும் அஞானிக்கு, ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜரின் நிலை எப்படி புரியும்?
பெரிய பெருமாளை பார்த்து "ஏன், திருமேனி பாங்கு இல்லையோ?" என்று கேட்டே விட்டார் ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜர்.
ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜரை பார்த்தார் பெரிய பெருமாள். பக்தன் மனோபாவத்துக்கு ஏற்று, பெருமாள் பழகுவார்.
அர்ச்ச அவதாரமாகவே பேசினார்,
"ஆமாம். கொஞ்சம் சரியாக இல்லை." என்று சொன்னார் பெரிய பெருமாள்.
"ஏன் இப்படி ஆனது?" என்று ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜர் கேட்க,
எனக்கு தயிர் சாதத்துடன், நெல்லிக்காயை வைத்து நிவேதனம் செய்து விட்டனர். நாமும் பக்தன் கொடுப்பதால் சாப்பிட்டு விட்டோம்.
இதனால் கொஞ்சம் உடலுக்கு ஒத்துக்காமல் ஆகி விட்டது. ஜுரம் வந்து விட்டது" என்றாராம் பெரிய பெருமாள்.
தன் பக்தனிடம், பக்தனின் மனோ நிலைக்கு ஏற்றாற்போல லீலை செய்வார் பகவான்.
அதுவரை ஸ்ரீ ரங்கராஜ்யம் நடத்தும் பெரிய பெருமாளுக்கு, தன் ரங்க ராஜ்யத்தில் அரச மருத்துவன் இல்லையாம்.
இதற்காக ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜரின் மனதில் இப்படி ஒரு எண்ணம் தோன்ற சங்கல்பம் செய்தார், பெரிய பெருமாள்.
பெரிய பெருமாளோ அர்ச்ச அவதாரத்தில் இருக்கிறார்.
ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜர் 'பெருமாளுக்கு ஜுரம்' என்று கேட்டவுடன், கண்ணீர் விட்டார்.
ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜர், பெரிய பெருமாளை பார்த்து,
"ஒரு மாமிச சரீரமாக இருந்தால், ஒரு மருத்துவரை கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வந்து காட்டலாம்.
உங்களுடைய அப்ராக்ருத திவ்ய சரீரத்துக்கு எந்த மருத்துவரை (டாக்டரை) கொண்டு வந்து காட்டுவேன்?"
என்று கண்ணீர் விட்டார்.
"நமக்கு தான் டாக்டர் இருக்கிறாரே"
என்றாராம் பெரிய பெருமாள்.
"அதை தேவரீர் தான் சொல்ல வேண்டும்" என்று ராமானுஜர் பிரார்த்திக்க,
"நம் சன்னதியில், 'தன்வந்திரி'யை பிரதிஷ்டை செய்யும். அவர் என்னை அடிக்கடி பார்த்துக்கொள்வார்"
என்று பெரிய பெருமாள் சொன்னார்.
அன்று முதல்,
பெரிய பெருமாளுக்கு எந்த பதார்த்தங்கள் தயார் செய்தாலும், அந்த பதார்த்தங்கள் பெரிய பெருமாளுக்கு உகக்குமா? என்று தன்வந்திரி எதிரில் வைத்து, அவர் அனுமதித்த பின் தான், பெரிய பெருமாள் நிவேதனம் செய்வாராம்.
பெரிய பெருமாளும், தன்வந்திரி அனுமதித்த பதார்த்தங்களை மட்டும் தான், அன்று முதல் தொடுவாராம்.
அப்படி ஒரு ப்ராதான்யம் (முக்கியத்துவம்) பெரிய பெருமாள், தன்வந்திரிக்கு கொடுத்துவிட்டார்.
தன்வந்திரியின் பெருமையை காட்ட, ஸ்ரீ ராமானுஜரின் பக்தி பாவத்தை காட்ட பெரிய பெருமாள் செய்த ரசிக்கதக்க லீலை இது.
இப்படி பெரிய பெருமாளே தனக்கு மருத்துவன் என்று வைத்து இருக்கும் தன்வந்திரியும் அவரே தான்.
