Kalarmulainathar Temple (Parijatha Vaneswarar Temple) is a Hindu temple located at Thirukkalar in the Tiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. The presiding deity of the temple is Shiva. Praises of the temple have been sung by the Saivite saints Sambandar and Thirunavukkarasar in the Thevaram. This is the 222nd Thevaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 105th Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery. Presiding Deity is called as Parijatha Vaneswarar / Kalarmulainathar. Mother is called as Amirthavalli / Ilankombannal. Sthala Vriksham is Parijatham. Theertham of this temple are Durvasa, Gnana, Brahmma and Rudra Theertham.
Legends
Lord Shiva granting the Brahmma Thandava Darshan to Sage Durvasa:
Lord Shiva performed his Ananda dance in Chidambaram and Perur, Aajaba in Tiruvarur, Gnana Sundara in Madurai, Oordhva in Avinashi, and Brahmma Thandava in Tirumuruganpoondi. Sage Durvasa performed severe penance in this place seeking the Ananda Thandava darshan of Lord which he granted to sages Vyakrapada and Patanjali. He brought the rare Parijatha flowers from the celestial world and made this place dense with these trees.
He also made a Shiva Linga and installed it under the Parijatha tree and created a spring. He built the temple with the divine sculptor. Hence the place has names as Parijatha Vanam, Tharu Vanam and Karpaga Vanam according to scriptures. Pleased with his penance, Lord granted the Brahmma Thandava darshan to the sage. Kalari in Tamil also means dance. Hence, this place is called as Thirukkalar.
Lord also is praised as Kalarmulai Nathar. Lord granting the Brahmma Thandava Darshan to Sage Durvasa is depicted in the temple. Sage Durvasa appears with folded hands in a worshipping form. According to scriptures, Durvasa performed the first consecration of the temple.
Lord Murugan as Teacher:
Lord Subramanya taught the Panchakshara Mantra (mantra of five letters – Na, Ma, Shi, Va, Yah) to 60,000 sages and Sage Durvasa in this place only. Valli and Deivanai are not with Lord Subramanya as he graces in the temple as a teacher-Guru.
Jeeva Samadhi of Kovilur Pontiff:
The Jeeva Samadhi-monument of Kovilur pontiff, His Holiness Veerasekhara Gnana Desika Swami is near the temple. Swamiji had rendered many renovations to the temple. He is praised as Thirukkalar Andavan.

The Temple
The temple is east facing and has an 80 feet high 5 tiered Rajagopuram. Presiding Deity is called as Parijatha Vaneswarar / Kalarmulainathar. Lord of the temple is a Swayambumurthy. Mother is called as Amirthavalli / Ilankombannal. There is a separate sannidhi for Ambal and facing east. Sthala Vriksham is Parijatham. Theertham of this temple are Durvasa, Gnana, Brahmma and Rudra Theertham.
Other than these main deities, the temple has sub shrines of Gods Muruga Valampuri Vinayaka, Somaskanda, God Viswanatha, Chandrasekharar, Dakshinamurthy, Navagrahas, Chandran, Vishnu, Brahma, Vishwakarma worshiped Shiva Lingams, Moshatruvareswarar, Somaskandar, Sthala Vinayagar, Natarajar and Chandikeswara. Other small shrines include that of Goddesses Gajalakshmi, Mahalakshmi, Ashta Puja Durgai, 63 Saivite Nayanmars and Sage Agasthya.
The idol of Goddess Durga is quite splendid as she sits in a sitting position on her lion vehicle and is located in outer mandapam. There is another shrine of God Akora Veerabhadra which faces towards the West direction. Tirukoyilur mutt ‘s 5th Pontiff had initiated Veda patasala, Thevara patasala, Agama Patasala and Chariot for this temple. Performing Panchakshara Japam at this place is considered to yield many folded results.

The temple remains open from 7.00 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
Festivals
Chithirai Brahmotsavam festival on Chitra star day in April-May; Vaikasi Visakam in May-June; Navarathri in September-October; Skanda Sashti in October-November; Margazhi Sashti, Arudra Darshan and Nama Shivaya Panchakshara Mantra initiation on Sadayam Star day (3 festivals) in December-January are the festivals celebrated in the temple.

This is the 222nd Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 105th Sthalam on the south side of River Cauvery in Chozha Naadu. The temple is praised by Saints Thirugnana Sambandar and Thirunavukkarasar in their Thevaram hymns.

Thirukkalar is located at about 5 Kms from Thiruppattur, 7 Kms from Kottur, 13 Kms from Thiruthuraipoondi, 22 Kms from Mannargudi, 35 Kms from Thiruvarur and 114 Kms from Trichy. Thirukkalar is located on Mannargudi – Thiruthuraipoondi Route. This Shivastalam is located to the North West of Thiruthuraipoondi on the southern bank of the river Pamani.
In the Mannargudi – Thiruthuraipoondi, 2 kms after Kottur Mani Ambalam Paadal Petra Sthalam towards Thiruthuraipoondi, there is a diversion to Thirukkalar at Thiruppattur. Further 5 kms on that road will take us to the temple. Town mini buses are available from Thiruthuraipoondi. Nearest Railway Station is located at Thiruthuraipoondi and Nearest Airport is located at Trichy.

களர் நிலத்தில் உள்ள கோயிலாததால், இப்பெயர் பெற்றது. துர்வாசருக்கு இறைவன் நடனக் காட்சி தந்தது.கோவில் அமைப்பு: காவிரி தென்கரைத் தலங்களில் 105 தலமாக விளங்கும் இத்தலம் ஊரின் நடுவே கிழக்கு நோக்கி அமைந்துள்ளது. ஆலயத்தின் எதிரே நான்கு பக்கங்களிலும் நான்கு படித்துறைகளைக் கொண்ட பெரிய திருக்குளம் உள்ளது. 80 அடி உயரமுள்ள இராஜகோபுரம் 5 நிலைகளை உடையது. கோபுரத்தில் அழகிய சுதைச் சிற்பங்கள் உள்ளன. இவ்வாலயம் மூன்று பிரகாரங்களைக் கொண்டுள்ளது. விருட்சம் (பவள மல்லிகை) தலவிருட்சமாக உள்ளது.அம்மன் சந்நிதி கருவறைச் சுற்றில் சிம்ம வாகனத்தில் அமர்ந்துள்ள அஷ்டபுஜ துர்க்கை சந்நிதி உள்ளது. வலம்புரி விநாயகர் சந்நிதியும், துர்வாசர் சந்நிதியும், விஸ்வநாதர், கஜலட்சுமி, 63 நாயன்மார்கள் சந்நிதிகளும் இவ்வாலயத்தில் உள்ளன. துர்வாச தீர்த்தம், ஞான தீர்த்தம், பிரம்ம தீர்த்தம், ருத்ர தீர்த்தம் ஆகியவை இவ்வாலயத்திலுள்ள தீர்த்தங்கள் ஆகும்.
த்தலத்தில் உள்ள முருகப் பெருமான் மிக்க அழகுடன் காட்சி தருகிறார். ஆறு முகங்களுடன் வள்ளி தெய்வானை உடன் இல்லாமல் தனியே குரு மூர்த்தமாக அருள் புரிகிறார். முருகப் பெருமான் 60000 முனிவர்களுக்கும், துர்வாசருக்கும் பஞ்சாட்சர மந்திரத்தை உபதேசம் செய்தது இத்தலத்தில் தான் என்பது ஐதீகம்.பதஞ்சலி முனிவருக்கும், வியாக்ரபாதருக்கும் சிவபெருமான் ஆனந்த தாண்டவ தரிசனம் தந்தருளியதை அறிந்த துர்வாச முனிவர் தானும் அந்த பாக்கியத்தைப் பெற விரும்பினார். துர்வாச முனிவர் இத்தலத்தின் மகிமையை உணர்ந்து தேவலோகத்தின் சிறந்த மலரான பாரிஜாதத்தை இங்கு கொண்டு வந்து வைத்து வளர்க்களானார். அது நாளடைவில் மிகவும் பெருகி பாரிஜாத வனமாயிற்று. பிறகு துர்வாச முனிவர் ஒரு சிவலிங்கம் அமைத்து பாரிஜாத மரத்தடியில் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து பக்கத்தில் அம்மனையும் ஸ்தாபித்து தேவதச்சன் மூலமாக இக்கோவிலை எடுப்பித்தார் என்று தலவரலாறு கூறுகிறது. இத்தலத்தில் துர்வாச முனிவருக்கு இறைவன் நடராஜர் பிரமதாண்டவ தரிசனம் கொடுத்தருளியதால் துர்வாசர் இத்தலத்தில் .எப்போதும் நடராஜ பெருமானின் பிரமதாண்டவத்தை தரிசித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார் என்பது ஐதீகம். இதன் அடையாளமாக இவ்வாலயத்தில் துர்வாசர் சந்நிதியும், நடராஜர் சந்நிதியும் எதிரெதிரே அமைந்துள்ளது. நடராஜ பெருமானின் 8 தாண்டவ தலங்களுள் இரண்டாவது தலமாக திருக்களர் தலம் அமைந்திருக்கிறது.இத்தலத்தில் வழிபாடு செய்தால் குடும்பத்தில் உள்ள அனைவருக்கும் மோட்சம் கிடைக்கும். கேது தோஷத்தினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் இங்கு வழிபட்டால் தோஷம் நிவர்த்தியாகும் என்பதும் ஐதீகம்.

இவ்வாலயம் தினந்தோறும் காலை 6 மணி முதல் 11-302 மணி வரையிலும், மாலை 4 மணி முதல் இரவு 8 மணி வரையிலும் திறந்திருக்கும்.
