But when can you know your nature - that you are peace? When you become stress free, when you drop these super-impositions, when you can relax, let go and dive towards it. That's why you've seen and heard this all over the world: new birth, born again or twice born. People use them in every religion and every place. It's prevalent all over.

Ashtavakra says, that Janaka had always looked at the surroundings, at the events, at his body, but had never looked at his own mind; that he was the live consciousness sticking to his body. This awareness has never dawned on him. That was why he could never see it. He should take the sword of knowledge and cut it off right away! Finish off the past.
There was a thief who happened to cross the path of a saint, by chance. It was night and he had to stop in a place of shelter. A saint happened to be there. He couldn't even see his face in the night, but he could see somebody sitting there, an old man with a stick and a robe on his body. So he started a conversation with him. The saint asked this man why he was a thief, looting several people and their homes and causing problems. He told him he was taking so much sin onto himself. The thief replied that he wanted to be happy. That he wanted to make his wife happy. She would become happy every day if he got her a new necklace, a new pair of bangles. That he wanted to make his children happy. He wanted to educate them well and bring them up in luxury. So for their benefit, he was committing the sin. That he knew it was a sin. So the saint remarked that it seemed that he was committing the sin for his family. The thief confirmed that he was. What did he need for himself? He just needed some food and a cup of milk. He did not need much for himself - a piece of cloth to cover himself and a shelter. That was not difficult. He told the saint that he was also getting everything but did not have to resort to stealing. He did not need to because he was given much by people. That he was even well fed. But he has to commit all those sins for the sake of his family.
Then, the saint asked him to ask his wife if she would take half the sins that he had committed. Had he ever asked her? And thief said that he had not. The thought had never come to him. He decided that he would ask her. So he went home, and asked his wife if she would take half his sins. The wife said that she would not. The children refused, too. Nobody was prepared to take half his sins though they were all prepared to take whatever he gave, whatever he brought home. This was a big realization for him. That he was committing all these horrible things, acquiring sins that would go with him, and nobody was prepared to share these sins, but they were all prepared to share what he earned from the sins. From that simple conversation one night, he could wake up and see all that he was craving for and worried about, was the past, and had nothing in it.
