Our mind is like a camera, taking pictures of events as they take place; but the events are not there. Just think what you did yesterday, and the day before that. Just go back in the flow of events. What happens? Swim backwards in the current. When you are swimming in the direction of the river, it gives you an illusion that you are swimming very fast. But try to swim against the current, then you know you are not swimming. In fact, it's the force of the water that is pushing you and carrying your body on. You can realize the force of events. You can realize that they simply do not exist this moment. What happened before that? What happened yesterday? You were happy, unhappy or sad. You argued, talked, danced, laughed and cried. What happened? Is it there now? Could you hold onto it now? What happened a month ago? Where were you a month ago? What happened two months ago? What happened two years ago? Isn't it all like a dream till this moment? Couldn't this be a dream? You will go to bed today, and then the next day something happens. That ends and the next day something else happens and ends. In another ten days, one month, two months, three months, six months...it's all finished. Is it not like a dream? Is it not like a movie? Events move, but they give you an impression that they are permanent; that they will stay and are so big. It is impossible. The camera in your mind gives you an illusion, a feeling that they stay and are big. Where is this universe? Where is it? Where is the society? Where is your life? What is it you are hanging onto-your wants, your likes and dislikes. What is it you dislike? What is it you crave for? Where are they? Are they not just a fleeting impression in the mind-coming and vanishing, coming and vanishing? Those moments stay in the photographic mind, and you are not able to see anything else clearly. They rob the clarity from you. When you are thinking about what happened the previous day (what so-and-so said to you), your mind is not alert and awake; you are unable to perceive things right now. You can see this practically for yourself. Keep several things in a room and ask somebody to look at them. Everybody looks at them in a different way, and not everyone looks at all the things. Many times even small things like the position of a bulb or switch in your room are invisible to your eyes because your mind is full of pictures from the past. The world is in your memory. You know, when several pictures are taken on the same film, it looks very funny. It gives you something else. It sometimes happen to you by mistake. You click several times to take one photograph. Afterwards there are more than one photograph on one frame. You take a picture of a bird and then you take a picture of someone else. In the photograph you will see the bird sitting on someone's nose i.e a double exposure-a simple term!
We are not double exposing minds; we are doing multiple exposure. This mind has become a multiple exposure. That's why the film does not mean anything; it's a mess. There's a couplet in Hindi, "Ek hi saadhe sub sadhe, sub saadhe sub jaye". The mind is imposed by so many impressions, the film is stuck. It is not moving, but you are exposing it over and over again. Wake up and see all has been like a dream. It's finished. It's not there right now. Then where are your cravings? 'Oh my God I want this!' Often you call Jesus at that time.
