Janaka said that many yogis and saints had advised him to do various things. He had done them all. He has surpassed and come away from them. That there was nothing that he wanted to achieve and nothing that he wanted to lose. He was at peace and at rest.
Whenever the time is not right, you are asked to do various things - japa, chanting, meditation, mudra, or pranayam. You are kept busy and engaged in so many things. It has a purpose. It is there for you - toy for you to play with; for a period.
This is all there for you to mature, to fall in deep love with the Divine. Once you have fallen in love with the Divine, the job is done - you are trapped! All these techniques are like a doughnut kept inside that rat trap. The rat gets trapped coming to eat it. In the same way the mind does this or that technique. By doing this or that, here and there, something clicks, and one falls in deep love with the Divine. Then that is enough. Many people have asked me why I don't advise some people to meditate, or why I don't insist that someone does their sadhana. I know who is where. It doesn't matter. There are several options for all the people. In the Gita, Krishna himself gives four or five options. He asks to do some practice when you cannot surrender and your mind is obstinate and needs a little bending. An independent, thinking mind needs to do some regular practices or sadhana. This softens it, making it more alive and lively. If you cannot do that, then, think you are working for me in whatever work you are doing. Think it is my work you are doing. It may be anything; removing weeds, moving rocks, washing dishes, cooking, sewing, making sweaters, crochet or knitting. Whatever you are doing, think you are doing it for the Divine. That itself becomes a sadhana. So, there are several options.
Some people like sitting still and meditating, while others cannot do this. They don't feel like sitting still because they are out there doing something or the other. But even doing that with a sense of service and love, is doing it for me. It has the same result. Some like to be on their feet and dance, and some like to sing loudly. All these have the same effect.
