Ashtavakra reminded Janaka that he had had this experience over and over again in so many lifetimes with his wife, son, daughter, family. He was not against Janaka having a family. But, he wanted to know how many times Janaka had fallen in love with x, y or z? They had come and gone, and he had wasted several lifetimes like that. He has wasted several years on 'I' and 'mine'. Maybe, he had been trying to do many religious deeds or services like making a pond here and a traveller's bungalow there; building hostels for people. You have done a lot of charity, too. Ashtavakra said that Janaka could not rest with none of this. He was continuously occupied, never leaving his mind hollow and empty. He could never just drop everything even for a while and rest in peace. Even when he sat for meditation, it was with a desire to achieve some goal; some higher state of consciousness. Something lingered on in his mind (some desire or something to be done), and he was not at total rest.
Ashtavakra said that enough was enough. Janaka had gone from one teacher to another teacher. They had always told him to do various practices. And he had been doing them regularly with a hankering in his mind that he would go to heaven or achieve liberation. His mind was never free from the desire of achievement. Unless and until he could be free from that desire of achieving, acquiring, or accomplishing something, how could his mind be restful?
And if it was not restful, how could the union with the Infinity, with the Divinity take place? How could he be hollow and empty with the hankerings?
Ashtavakra very lovingly patted Janaka on the back, and told him to rest and to be hollow and empty - that he had all that he needed. Just rest, you have come to your goal.
You have come home now. Get out of your car. You have been driving for a long, long time. The car has reached home now but you are still sitting in it with the engine running! How long are you going to sit in your car? As long as you are in the car, you will not be home. You have returned. It is enough now! Enter your home and take rest.
