God, Guru, and Self are synonymous; they are the same. You call the unseen God and you call the seen your Self. You see that I exist, you call that Self. And you call the solid form you see in front of you, Guru. What is unseen through the eyes, we call God. You have not seen your Self fully (partially seen) but you can't say you do not know you exist. You know that you exist, you partially know your Self. You know you want this, you don't want that. You know that you are nobody. That is Self. And what you see fully through your eyes in front of you, is Guru. From seen, to unseen, is just the difference in name. Once space, one being, pervades all that is.
That's why one should never see Guru as a personality. This is a principle that has been enunciated in the past. If you make someone your Guru, don't see him as a personality. See him as being beyond a personality. Do not hang onto his outer behavior, personalities or even words. But see beyond the words. See the being; see the hollow and empty, everfull presence. Stop judging in your mind. As soon as you see somebody, your mind is in a haste to judge and label them - they like this, they don't like that; they should do this... You start telling the Guru what he should be doing! A disciple telling the Guru what to do. It is such a funny situation! You call someone a Guru, and then tell him what he should be doing. If you know what he should be doing, how can he be a Guru? You have become the Guru of the Guru. Everyone wants to be a Guru and nobody wants to be devotee, a disciple. Janaka, a true devotee suddenly jumped out of his seat and said that he bowed down to himself. His surrender to Ashtavakra was so total. He could suddenly feel that there was no difference. That God, Guru, and his Self are not two or three; only one. His questions disappeared. He reaffirmed whatever Ashtavakra said in his own words. That they were not even his words. The words flow through him.

'Though this body is present, I am pervading all over. I bow down to that, my Self, in spite of this body.' This is very beautiful. In spite of the body, the little imperfection, the little limitation, he was only one. Though the body gave the idea that he was separate and different, he was the only one. The body gives you the idea of being different and of everybody else being different. It divides the existence into two. When you perceive skillfully, then you will note that you are not different from the entire existence, despite this body which tries (and appears) to divide and separate you. The body appears to make distinctions in this existence by creating illusions. As though there are two - them and me, he and I. In spite of this effort - this law that is working - I see there is nothing outside me. I am the only one that exists. Neither do I go anywhere nor do I come. Neither do I get anything nor do I lose anything. I am present in this entire creation.
