Consciously do trivial things for eternity unites you with eternity

Consciously do trivial things for eternity unites you with eternity

The readiness to consciously do trivial things for eternity unites you with eternity. This is an antidote to ego. Ego is always ambitious and wants to do the toughest job. But a simple act like observing a butterfly, watering the garden, watching the birds or the sky can bring deep relaxation; and connect you with your source.

One attains the divine by being innocent and natural

One attains the divine by being innocent and natural

There are two things you must remember: Our godliness lies in our innocence and in being natural. That is why it is said, 'Sahaj miley avinashi' (One attains the divine by being innocent and natural).

The second thing to remember is that we have received a lot from the divine. Just take it for granted that you have received a lot in your life.
If you keep thinking, 'I want this, I want that', then the mind becomes restless and wanders here and there. But when you have this deep faith that 'I have received so much in life', then the mind is at peace and there is contentment.

What is the significance of Guru Puja? Is it worth learning this chant?

Gurudev, What is the significance of Guru Puja? Is it worth learning this chant?

Gurudev @SriSriRaviShankar ji - Guru Puja is the mother of All mantras, the MAHA MANTRA.

You can make your whole body in such a way where it becomes an Invitation to the divine.

Guru Puja is an ancient sanskrit invocation, which invites the ascended and enlightened masters to enter your space. The way the mantra is stated, there is no choice but for these divine energies to answer the call of Guru Puja. As you give yourself to the process of this invocation, your energy aligns with the divine and as a result your vibration raises in wonderful ways.

Practicing Guru Puja on a regular basis will bring a different quality to your life. It awakens your inner divinity, allowing you to access peaceful and blissful feelings throughout your day. It is a powerful tool used by many yoga practitioners and we would like to offer to you this opportunity to bring it into your daily life.

A sanskrit chant with 36 verses. Within this mantra there are 16 ways In which we invoke the divine through powerful ceremony and ritual. It is a way to make yourself like an offering to the divine while you receive the blessings that this invocation brings. It is a way to consecrate sacred space in your environment, your home and around your sacred altar.

The Three Energies

*The Three Energies*

Their are three types of _shaktis_ or energies.

*First is _Ichcha Shakti_ or the Energy of Desire.* It is there inside all of us.
We all want health and happiness in our lives.

*Second is _Kriya shakti_ or the Energy of Action* and that is all there inside all of us too.

*Third is _Gyan Shakti_ or Energy of Knowledge.* It is knowing what to act upon in order to ensure this health and happiness in our lives.

In different parts of the world you will see that people have amazing dedication and commitment but they are running after the wrong things.

Often people don’t realise now but as they reach later stages of their lives
they realise that they had been looking for happiness all these years of their life at the wrong place.

You all have the _Kriya Shakti_ and _Gyan Shakti_ that is why you take pains to get up in the morning and come to the sadhna session.

*But how much are you dedicated and committed to this path? You should check this with yourself.*

You all come for sadhna morning and evening. But after it gets over, again you get back to seeking for happiness from the 5 sense pleasures and 4 _vaicharik pleasures_(money, fame, position and progeny).

This reverse shift happens.

We all are on the spiritual path now and it is upto you now to decide how far you want to grow on this path.

How to make the intellect transparent?

Q : When the six layers of our existence become transparent, then we are able to perceive the seventh layer, the self. Could you please talk about how to make the intellect transparent?

Let us understand what the intellect is. Consciousness functions largely in four different modes, similar to the different modes or functions in a cell phone. The four different modes in the consciousness are:

1. The Mind - The Mode of Perception: Now you are looking at me, I am looking at you. It is the mind through which the eyes perceive, and the mind through which the ears hear. It is the mind through which the nose smells, if there is a good fragrance around; but if your mind is elsewhere, you would not even notice the fragrance.

So, this faculty through which we smell, taste, hear, see, touch, is the mind.

2. The Intellect – The Mode of Analysis: Once you perceive, then the mind goes on judging, whether this is good, not good. The understanding of the fragrance; the understanding of the site; the understanding of the sound falling on your ears. This is the intellect. The intellect categorizes, analyses things; saying this is right or wrong, or I like this and I don’t like that.
In order to analyze things, the intellect needs a third layer, called the memory.

3. The Memory - The Mode of Storage: The intellect is in between the memory and the mind. The mind and the memory together make the intellect function. If there is no memory, the intellect cannot function. The basis of the intellect is memory and perception. The memory captures some deep impressions, that is the limitation of the memory. It captures the pleasant memories, and the unpleasant memories (the unwanted, deep impressions called trauma); all of these are stored in the memory.

4. The Ego – The Sense of Identification: Beyond the memory, the consciousness identifies with something, that is ego. Then is the Self - it is beyond the four different functions. It is the reference point of all changes. If you say that everything is changing, you do notice that everything is changing, right? Your body is changing, your thoughts are changing; thoughts form part of the mind. Your concepts are changing, that is the intellect. The memory is changing, there are certain things you remember, and certain things you don’t remember. All this is changing. If you say that all this is changing, there must be something that doesn’t change; this is the logic. How do you know something is changing? This is because there is something that is not changing. Now you don’t know what this something is! But there is something, some vague thing that is there, and you can feel the changes because of its presence. What is this something? Lord Buddha wanted to know this. He meditated and meditated, and he found that there is nothing! It is empty.

He said, ‘I searched and searched and searched for the Self, but I could not find it. There is nothing.’ He said, ‘Shunya (zero); everything is empty. There is only emptiness; I could not find anything’. Adi Shankaracharya, from the Vedic tradition, came after Lord Buddha.

When Adi Shankaracharya met Lord Buddha, he said, ‘Yes, I understand, this is all temporary, everything is changing'. He asked Lord Buddha, ‘You said you could not find the Self, but who could not find the Self? There must be someone who was searching. Who was searching? Who could not find? That is the Self!’

With this one logic, Adi Shankaracharya turned around and brought the Vedic culture back into India. The Vedic principle is that everything is full; this is all consciousness. What we perceive as empty, is all bliss. Adi Shankaracharya said that the one who could not find (the Self), the one who is searching for it, that one is Sat Chit Anand. It has three characteristics: Truth, Consciousness and Bliss.

The day we understand the difference between needs and wants, all our mental chaos will end

*Sanjaya*, (the seer to the blind King Dhritarashtra, at the end of the Mahabharata war went to the spot where the greatest war took place; Kurukshetra.

He looked around and wondered if the war really happened, if the ground beneath him had soaked all that blood, if the great Pandavas and Krishna stood where he stood.

“You will never know the truth about that!” said an aging soft voice.

Sanjay turned around to find an old man in saffron robes appearing out of a column of dust.

“I know you are here to find out about the Kurukshetra war, but *you cannot know about that war till you know what the real war is about*.” the Old man said enigmatically.

“What do you mean?”

*The Mahabharata is an Epic, a ballad, perhaps a reality, but definitely a philosophy*.

The Old man smiled luring Sanjay into more questions.

“Can you tell me what the philosophy is then?” Sanjay requested.

Sure, began the Old man.

*The Pandavas are nothing but your five senses*, sight, smell, taste, touch and sound.

And do you know what the *Kauravas* are? he asked narrowing his eyes.

*The Kauravas are the hundred vices that attack your senses everyday but you can fight them*... and do you know how?

Sanjay shook his head again.

“When Krishna rides your chariot!”

The Old man smiled brighter and Sanjay gasped at that gem of insight.

*Krishna is your inner voice, your soul, your guiding light and if you let your life in his hands you have nothing to worry❕*

Sanjay was stupefied but came around quickly with another question.

“Then *why are Dronacharya and Bhishma fighting for the Kauravas, if they are vices*?”

The Old man nodded, sadder for the question.

It just means that as you grow up, your perception of your elders change. *The elders who you thought were perfect in your growing up years are not all that perfect. They have faults. And one day you will have to decide if they are for your good or your bad.  Then you may also realize that you may have to fight them for the good. It is the hardest part of growing up and that is why the Geeta is important*.

Sanjay slumped down on the ground, not because he was tired but because he could understand and was struck by  the enormity of it all.

 *What about Karna*? he whispered.

“Ah!” said the Old man. “You have saved the best for last. *Karna is the brother to your senses, he is desire, he is a part of you but stands with the vices. He feels wronged and makes excuses for being with the vices as your desire does all the time.*

*Does your desire not give you excuses to embrace vices*?”

Sanjay nodded silently. He looked at the ground, consumed with a million thoughts, trying to put everything together and then when he looked up the Old man was gone, disappeared in the column of dust, leaving behind the great philosophy of Life!
The day we understand the difference between needs and wants, all our mental chaos will end,

4 ways to improve your mental health

4 ways to improve your mental health:

1. You’ve overcome problems before!

Remember that this is not the first time you’re facing a problem. You’ve faced problems before, & you’ve overcome them. Learn from your experience. You’ll get over this as well.

2. Hold on to the positive.

If we’re given 10 compliments & 1 insult, we tend to hold on to the 1 insult. We need to reorient ourselves & accept that when there are 10 positives that come our way, it is inevitable that there might be 1 negative as well.

3. Active Compassion.

There’s a great joy in giving. If you get involved in action-oriented expression of compassion, you’ll feel much better. Get involved in service projects in your community.

4. Live in the present moment.

Our mind keeps oscillating between the past & the future, and then we crib about the past or feel anxious about the future. Joy & happiness can be found in the present moment.

Five Types of Restlessness

Five Types of Restlessness

There are five types of restlessness.

 1. The first type of restlessness is due to the place you are in. When you move away from that place, the street or the house, you immediately feel better. Chanting, singing, children playing and laughing can change this atmospheric restlessness. If you chant and sing, the vibration in the place changes.

2. The second type of restlessness is in the body. Eating the wrong food or vata aggravating food, eating at odd times, not exercising, and overworking can all cause a physical restlessness. The remedy for this is exercise, moderation in work habits and going on a vegetable or juice diet for one or two days.

3. The third type of restlessness is mental restlessness. It is caused by ambition, strong thoughts, likes or dislikes. Knowledge alone can cure this restlessness. Seeing life from a broader perspective, knowledge about the Self and the impermanence of everything. If you achieve everything, so what? After your achievement, you will die. Knowledge of your death or life, confidence in the Self, in the Divine, can all calm down the mental restlessness.

4. Then there is emotional restlessness. Any amount of knowledge does not help here. Only Kriya helps! All that emotional restlessness vanishes. Also the presence of the Guru, a wise person, or a saint will help to calm your emotional restlessness.

5.The fifth type of restlessness is rare. It is the restlessness of the soul. When everything feels empty and meaningless, know you are very fortunate. That longing and restlessness is the restlessness of the soul. Do not try to get rid of it. Embrace it! Welcome it! Usually to get rid of it people do all sorts of things - they change places, jobs or partners, do this, do that. It seems to help for some time, but it does not last.
This restlessness of the soul alone can bring authentic prayer in you. It brings perfection, Siddhis and miracles in life. It is so precious to get that inner most longing for the Divine. Satsang, the presence of the enlightened one, soothes the restlessness of the soul.

The 4 kinds of attitude you can develop to handle your own mind

The 4 kinds of attitude you can develop to handle your own mind

1) Friendliness: Be friendly with people who are happy. If you are not friendly with happy people, you will be jealous. This is because you think that your enemy is happy, and you cannot tolerate your enemy being happy. So, shake hands with happy people. Such an attitude does a lot of good to your mind.

2) Compassion: Do not be friendly with people who are miserable, instead, have compassion for them. If you are friendly with unhappy people you will become unhappy. And if you become unhappy, you can never help them to come out of their misery.

Many people have gotten into trouble by being friendly with unhappy people; both become miserable. It is like a doctor going to a patient who is sick, and the doctor also becomes sick. If the doctor also thinks, ‘How can I alone be healthy? Let me also share the patient’s misery’, then who will help the patient then?

So, what should be the attitude with people who are miserable? Compassion, not pity.

3) Happiness: For people who are doing good work or who are successful in the world, you should feel happy as though you are doing it.

For example, someone is a good singer, singing and bringing joy to everybody, seeing him you should think, ‘I feel so happy that this person is singing so well, and making everyone happy.’

If someone is a good entertainer and he entertains everybody you should feel happy about it. If someone is a great architect and builds beautiful buildings you should feel happy about it. Whenever someone does a good job, share that happiness with them; we need to have this attitude.

4) Indifference: For people who are doing horrible things in the society, destroying themselves, we usually get angry at them. When you are angry, your mind suffers a huge loss. You lose so much energy, you lose your mood, and your enthusiasm. When energy and enthusiasm goes away from you, you become angry and are no better than the other person. You do not know what you are doing. So, what should you do in such a situation? Have a sort of indifference in your mind.

For example, there are thieves in the world, they are there, what can you do about them? First accept, be indifferent. However, this does not mean you do not take any action. Your mind is indifferent (unaffected), but you act on it.

These are the four attitudes that will help us to save our mind. This is what we need to do, save our mind at all costs.

What are the ways to overcome fears?

Question - Gurudev, what are the ways to overcome fears?

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji - There are Four ways to overcome fears -

1. Observation

You observe fear. When fear comes, what happens? Some sensation arises in the chest. Observe, go deep into the observation of the sensation. Every emotion in the mind creates a corresponding sensation in the body.
When you observe the sensation, then the emotion gets transformed as a sensation in the body and disappears. See that? This observation is a meditation technique. You observe the sensation and the sensation gets released and the mind becomes free.

2. Belongingness

If observation is difficult, then have a feeling of belonging. I belong to God, or God is taking care of me. Or there is my teacher, my master, to whom I belong, my master is taking care of me. The Divine is taking care of me. By having a sense of belonging, the fear goes away. You belong to somebody. You belong to God. You belong to the Master. You belong to this world or belong to some power. With that sense of belonging, fear goes away. This may be easier, simpler.

3. Know the Impermanence of everything

See the impermanence of everything. Everything is changing around you so fast. Even if you want, you can’t hold on to anything. Things come and things go. People come and people go. Their moods change, emotions change. Their way of behaving with you changes. Everything changes. See the impermanence of all things, everything around you. The whole world is changing. Then also you gain strength. Then also fear disappears.

Fear is clinging on, holding on, not letting go. And there is nothing that you can hold on to in this life. Is there anything that you can hold on to? One day you have to bid goodbye to everything. Absolutely everything, including your own body, you will have to say goodbye. This awareness also brings enormous strength from within you and you’ll be able to laugh.

4. Unleash the Power of your Mind with Sudarshan Kriya

One of the techniques that I advocate and teach everywhere is the Sudarshan Kriya. Sudarshan means the right vision of who I am.“Kriya” means purifying action. In one hour’s time, the very first practice, you see how the energy, the mind, and oxygen penetrate deep into every cell of your body and cleanse you on a very deep level. Every cell of your body gets cleansed, energized, and more oxidized.
