When we talk about truth, we normally take it as a phenomenon, an instance, happening or a perception. If someone asks what you ate, you reply that you ate four chapati or three bananas. You might have eaten four bananas and three chapati ! What we think of as truth are only events, phenomenon and happenings - the apparent reality. But that is not what truth is. The synonym for truth is existence. What exists is Truth. The five important points are: forgiveness, sincerity, compassion, contentment and truth.
Did these five principles come up during the day? Did you forgive yourself or someone else for what happened? Were you sincere in what you were doing. Situations have been created for you to do this. Don't think the Gita is just for one or two hours. The discourse is happening throughout the day. It isn't ending. The process has begun. The ball is set rolling.
One gentleman came to me and said that he would feel lazy applying soap to all parts of his body! And only that day did he notice that he was doing this! Every day he would apply the soap to one part of his body and not all over. He would take a partial bath. That day he had noticed this for the first time.
Accepting that you have been insincere is sincerity, not judging, not giving any explanation, not justifying oneself; but acknowledging it. Then you have become sincere. At that very moment you have sincerity. Were you compassionate towards yourself and others? Were you contented with what is and what was happening around you? Did you remember the truth that all things are changing? What is truth? This will all go.
This body will change, this universe will change, the circumstances and situations will change. A couple of weeks ago, you were sitting in the same place, maybe with showers of rain on your head. Now you have a roof. This will change. Did you, during the course of the day, ever remind yourself that this will all change? Pleasant to unpleasant, unpleasant to pleasant; these cycles go on. Did we remember this? This is truth. Did you remember something in you is untouched by time? Time comes and goes but 'I' stays forever. Changes happen in the body. They come and go but you go on forever.
Yesterday, an example came to my mind. What happens if you stand on beach, and a wave comes and lashes at your feet? When the wave recedes, it takes some mud from underneath your feet, but nothing happens to your feet. Just mud is taken out from under your feet and carried away. The same thing happens with time. Time comes and lashes at you, takes a little bit of mud from underneath your feet and goes away. It can't do any damage to you. Reminding ourself of this is truth. One who is in total agreement is a sadhak (a seeker).
That's why Jesus gave the vow of poverty to people, and Buddha put begging bowls in the hands of the monks and nuns. What is the purpose behind it? Your ego is crushed when you have to ask, or beg for something. Where is the ego? It is dissolved, and you begin to completely rely on the unseen power which governs the entire creation. It is not that somebody is feeding you or clothing you or taking care of your health. Not the doctor but Divinity, something unseen. This reminder softens you; brings about miracles around you, and changes your life. This reminder brings plenitude: there is nothing lacking for you. And that is the complete 'letting go'.
We don't hold on to big things. We hold on to small, little things around us. We hold on to straws here and there. But you are given something that is very precious, our mind has to know that the hands are full of straws, which are good-for-nothing. Letting go is the necter, the ambrosia. Ambrosia is being offered to you but you are holding onto some poison ivy! You don't have to make an effort, just wake up!
