After listening to Ashtavakra's points never feel low in front of any holy or enlightened people. Never feel low, but be very humble. It is different. Don't become stiff and egoistic. It's very easy to misinterpret the whole knowledge. This is what has happened. Many saints, the sanyasis, are not suppose to bow down before anybody other than Shankaracharya. And many people and sanyasis mistake it totally. They become so stiff! They don't need to bow down to anybody other than Shankaracharya. And sanyasis of other groups don't even do that. They don't even bow down to Shankaracharya. It's not the physical bowing down, but the inner state of consciousness that matters. It is hollow and empty - full of love and flowing consciousness; the recognition of the same Divinity in everybody, all over. This is supreme knowledge. People are afraid to even talk about Ashtavakra. He keeps everything open. The concern for the growth of a devotee into the Divinity was all that mattered for Ashtavakra.
Everyone says to surrender only to them. A husband will say to the wife to surrender only to him. And the wife will say that he dare not look at anybody else. That he should surrender only to her. Krishna also said the same thing; mam ekam sharanam vraja. That surrender should be done only to him. But this is very different from the stand taken by a wife or a husband. The words are the same. But, he intentions are different. Krishna was not just interested in making more devotees or followers. A true guru is not interested in making more followers. But he is concerned with the growth of the person. His only concern is how well the flirting mind can be arrested and established in its source. How can this mind, which is so blind, and seeking here and there, be put into Self, and made to open its eye to its Self. Krishna said mam ekam sharanam vraja, surrender only to him. Only a very hollow and empty person can say this. Otherwise it could be mistaken. Buddha could not say to surrender only to him. He said to bow down to the enlightened one. Buddham sharanam gacchami. Then he said to bow down to the assembly of practitioners. Sangham sharanam gacchami. When neither are available bow down to the righteousness, the dharma or religion. Dhammam sharanam gacchami. Buddha was dealing with very intelligent, intellectual, and highly sophisticated minds. Buddha had a very elite class of disciples. They were not just ordinary people. They were highly educated. They were very sophisticated, people who thought they knew everything. So, he had to tell them in a very different way. It also worked.
