Desires and lusts are known to be the biggest enemies of awareness. It is still surprising, a wonder, how even though the body is not capable of functioning, one has desires and lust. Your mind is not clear and focused when there is an obsession, or when desire is burning in you. And see how calm, collected, cool and aware your mind is when these desires drop. See how clear and focused you are. Many people have never experienced such focus, such clarity at all in their lives! This is their misfortune. I can only wonder at how those who have experienced even a little bit, get into desires and lust. Knowing it, you still get into it. Ashtavakra is not saying this is bad and you shouldn't do it, because then the mind will say, 'No, I shouldn't do it' and then the whole trip begins. The monkey will begin there. He says, 'Wonder!' So maybe once in a while, even Janaka would get some thoughts of mine-ness or a little fear here and there. Ashtavakra gives him formula, 'Look and wonder about these samskaras in you. At that very moment they dissolve and you rise above them.' People strive for liberation. They want freedom. Yet, even those who long for freedom are afraid of freedom. On one hand, they wan to be free, and on the other hand they don't want the freedom. It is really a wonder to see how even those who have dispassion, in their worldly things and in their inner experiences, and who long or strive for liberation, have a fear of being liberated.
So Ashtavakra spoke about four aspects : sex, the feeling of mine-ness or personal feelings, desires and fear.
