Jacaranda mimosifolia (Hindi-Neela Gulmohar/Neeli Gulmohur, Marathi-Neelmohar, Bengali-Neelkanth, Manipuri-Nil gulmohar, Nepali-Bhangeree Phool, Mizo-Aprilparpawl, Popular -Brazilian Rosewood/Black Poui/Green Ebony/Mimosa Leaved Ebony/Jacaranda/Blue Jacaranda)Bignoniaceae).Syn-J.ovalifolia, J.chelonia, J.filicifolia.It is a fast growing deciduous tree with spreading branches and growing upto 10-20 m tall. It is grown in farm houses and big gardens. It is widely grown in tropical climates. Leaves are bipinnately compound and upto 50 cm long. Flowers are tubular, upto 5 cm long and are grouped in 30 cm panicles. The colour of the flowers range from blue to bluish purple, lilac purple, lavender blue or mauve ,showy and light fragrant. Flowering during spring and summer. Flowering is followed by woody seed pods, about 5 cm in diameter containing numerous flat, winged seeds. It is native to Brazil and Northern Argentina. The tree has antioxidant, antibacterial , anti inflammatory, antitumor, antihypertensive, antifungal, antiviral, anticancer (prostate cancer),diuretic and astringent activities. The phytochemicals present are phenolic compounds, tannins, flavonoids, esters, fatty acids, carotenoids, monosaccharides and phytosterols. Leaves contain carbohydrates, flavonoids, tannins, sterols, saponins and cardiac glycosides (digitoxin).Flowers contain flavonol glycoside and isoquercitrin. Mainly leaves and barks are used for medicinal purposes. It is beneficial for amoebic dysentery, hepatitis syphilis, neuralgia and varicose veins, skin and bacterial infections, gonorrhea and urinary tract problems. Flowers are used as a substitute for the Unani herba Gul-e-Gaozabaan in Pakistan. The bark has been used in the treatment of wounds and dermatitis. The ground bark is used as a decoction against venereal diseases. Infusion of Flowers is used to treat amoebic dysentery in Mexico. In folk medicine, leaves and bark are used to treat neuralgia and varicose veins. Hot leaves bath treat wounds and skin infections. Leaf extract or juice can be applied for relief from sores and ulcers caused by venereal diseases. One teaspoon of leaves juice cures venereal diseases. Roots and barks are used to treat syphilis. It has been used as a natural remedy for bacterial infections, gonorrhea, syphilis and leukemia. It is also used to treat urinary tract problems.
